The end of the 4 digit PIN

IHG have finally ditched the 4 digit PIN number and a stronger password can now be used to access accounts.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the recent website and app issue.

Reading about this elsewhere new accounts will have to have passwords from creation.

Existing accounts will be able to chose to change but (at present) won't be forced to change to a password.

Passwords muct be at least 8 characters incuding at least 3 from the following upper and lower case letters, numbers and special characters

so picking from the first poster 'chrism20' wouldn't be allowed but 'Chrism20' would be as it has upper and lower case letters and numbers.

Definitely let’s you change it in the most up to date version of the app (4.37.1) which was released yesterday. It was on there I noticed it was allowing an actual password rather than a pin.

The existing 4 digit pin will still work, you have to physically change it. It doesn’t prompt you to do it.

Just tried it in latest app version and changed it to a strong password. Finally IHG, was about time after years of neglect and raided accounts. This would be worth an announcement instead of some of the upsell / cross sell offers I get every other week.

Thanks to the OP for highlighting.

Thumbs up

App allowed me to change to a password. This is quite a relief.

2FA next please...... (10 years wait, I know)

Yes, but did you verify that after changing it to a password on the app, the PIN no longer works on the website?

Ie, it's no big increase in security if they still accept both!

Well, given IHG's past account security you do have a point and it would not have been in the realm of the impossible, but the old PIN password does not work in app nor on the website any longer. Tested it.

Haven't kept up with the day to day of IHG lately, but this was a welcomed surprise when I logged in recently. I went into my profile just to check, and boom!

It's great they've caught up to 2002 standards and decent passwords now.

Actually, I kind of liked the 4-digit pin. It was easy to remember.

And easy to crack by hackers. Convenience over headaches later when your account was cleaned out, I know my pick. YMMV

True, but for most of us who got lucky and never had our accounts hacked it was convenient. Nevertheless, I agree with you better security is still the most important consideration and trumps convenience. Luck only lasts so long....
