Downward rate changes at IHG hotels

In April I booked the Holiday Inn Long Island City for two weekend nights. Saturday on my Credit Card free night and Sunday as a prepaid (non refundable) stay about three weeks in advance. Sundays seem to be the least occupancy levels for hotels in NYC.

A week before my arrival the rate for the Holiday Inn, IHG went down nearly 40 points. Since I prepared, couldn't cancel and rebook. Had I booked the refundable rate would have canceled and rebooked.

Is this common? Anybody, notice downward rate changes on IHG properties? Thanks,

SBT

It's usually the other way around. But there are a few that do heavy discounting few weeks before. IC Ljubliana comes to mind.

Booking way in advance is always a gamble. If I need a room when I know demand will be high, I book the lowest pay-at-checkout rate in advance. Then keep monitoring rates to see if they decrease. That has happened at the IC Chicago a couple times, but not always. If the rates do go down, it usually happens just a week or two before the arrival date.
