Update 2023:
- it seems no new RA have been invited by IHG
- criteria for RA requalification are still unknown
- geographical location of member / country account registration seems of some impact due of covid19(restrictions/availability)
- RA is processed in weekly batches starting december 2022
- proof by nicolas75 shows RA qualification for 2024 seems to be strictly based on IC hotels only (not Regent, Kimpton, SixSenses anymore)

As per Tim O'Brien's post about IHG-corporate explaining RA criteria:

As you are aware,
Royal Ambassador is our invitation only tier with the number of members invited each year
limited to ensure our hotels are able to consistently deliver on the benefits promise,
elevating your stay experience at InterContinental Hotels & Resorts.

Although we do not currently have a published criteria for Royal Ambassador,
consideration is determined by variable activities within a members account such as
- qualified paid room nights & spend across our luxury brands (, 2023 EDIT: Post-Pandemic from 2024 InterContinental only : Pre-Pandemic also Kimpton & Regent ) ,
- member region,
- primary hotels,
- category (of the hotel class / €$¥£ price levels compared to currency rates / competition / city / region / country / continent )
- tenure (repeat custom / average spend at hotel)
Accompanying or adjoining reservations,
such as the additional rooms of your family etc are not included for Royal Ambassador consideration
but are included in determining Spire Elite status within IHG Rewards Club
.

* FT:IHG forum community group consensus / empirical evidence shows
- that members must have stayed at different unique hotels per city / country / region / continent
the amount of uniques needed for RA qualification is unknown but generally extended long stays at just 1 hotel do not qualify
- IHG-corporate showing keen interest in how much guests are spending €$¥£ at hotel's own operated F&B / Spa / transport / extra services / other venues
atacama40 has given us insights that extra spend at the hotel charged to the hotelfolio generates EQP but also flags the database as high valued spending guest
- one must have AMB to get considered for RA invitation by IHG as they seem to evaluate over a longer period the length of one's tenure / devotion / spend / undisclosed criteria at stayed IC-hotels

Update 2020 / 2021:
RA status was extended due to the global pandemic of covid19

================================================== =======

Update 2019: The RA status granted at the start of the calendar year 2017 and 2018 has been based on IC revenue. As from 2019 criteria again have become vague. RA is not achieved through IC spend only. Other, unknown elements are taken into account as well. (Fact: Some users with very high +25k IC spend were not renewed in 2019.)

Update December 2018: it looks like some accounts are proactively being renewed in December 2018, well ahead of the stated expiration of Jan 31, 2019. It is currently unknown what criteria were used, but previous years appeared to indicate around $10K++ in IC spend only.

As before, please Divide EQPs by 10 to get $$$ Spend

[Archived - no longer valid] New (Royal) Ambassador Criteria

A document was unintentionally available in the internet about changes to the (Royal) Ambassador Qualifying and Re-Qualifying criteria.
The document is available on

http://viewfromthewing.img.boardinga...Ambassador.pdf

Older discussion
There was an ongoing discussion about the criteria for some time. This thread is now closed.

update from Executive Liaison Sept, 2023,
spend at other IHG luxury brands does count for RA, and Renewal.
Brands weren't stated, but reasonable to assume Six Senses, Regent, and Kimpton.

yes i have always found utilising the FHR at the Willard beneficial, as breakfast for five pax in the French bistro can run $250, technically the FHR is for 2 pax, i wld book two suites to get the breakfast for all. they threw in the 5th pax.....

I too use FHR whenever possible.

As for the $20 credit, I didn't even know about it but they offered it to me without asking in Nairobi recently. And they have a nice club.

i've never utilised Virtuoso, but currently at the Barclay, and the welcome Virtuosso guests at the Ambassador desk.

is it like FHR, in that does it cover limited basket of properties, or is it broader, include all?

because the FHR rates i've found relatively aligned with "best flex", so maybe marginally higher than "your rate" but the $100 F&B credit is well worth it, and the breakfast benefit also, when no club, like the Willard.

So do I understand correctly, $100 F&B credit provided where a lounge is present but no access granted (heaven knows why that would happen) and hotels with no club lounge, no credit?

From website:
Complimentary Club InterContinental lounge access
i. Applicable only where the hotel has a dedicated Club InterContinental lounge
ii. Valid for two people including the member, staying in the member's room only
iii. Where the hotel does not operate a dedicated Club InterContinental lounge, Royal Ambassador members will be given two complimentary full breakfasts in the main restaurant per day for the member and one registered guest staying in the member’s room
iv. The Club InterContinental lounge access Benefits Guarantee is not applicable at hotels that do not operate a dedicated Club InterContinental lounge.
Welcome to the Club!

we've all been trying to work out whether it's intentional or other for years......

But wait a minute. Shouldn't RA's get free breakfast for two at all IC's now? Including the Willard?

And by and large it worked. I know a number of members complained about the lack of definitions and consistency, but I certainly had no complaints. Check-in and out times were quiet fluid, lounges were happy to accommodate guests and guests-of-guests, and there was none of the nonsense at check out about assessments for mini-bars and credits for services for not provided.

The new regime has tied itself in knots, i guess trying to appease the bean-counters among hotel owners/managers. Or maybe just corporate new blood trying to make a name for itself. The end result is a reduced cohort of RAs facing a bewildering array of regulations - some mutually incompatible and others incoherent in their message. I guess the good hotels will eventually find their way through the mess and return to looking after the guests they value.

In the meantime the farce continues, My recently delivered card promises me membership until January 2019....
you have to give them credit for consistency

As RA you're getting the USD20 credit, i thought that was only for Ambassadors?

i have had three recent stays at the Barclay, including currently, most of the rules as they are super strict on, won't upgrade to a suite, i pay a supplement to get a bed suite, and in fairness large room number property, with very few suites, approx 17 one bed suites, a handful of executive, and name suites, and a Presidential, and Penthouse.

i heard the lounge manager who is very nice to us, as relatively regular stayers, say to an English guest "i am not going to charge you as the lounge is closing shortly, but the benefit is for only yourself, and one guest" he must had someone else earlier, but was totally unnecessary..

didn't receive the 600 welcome points, last stay, did on the previous stay, but they are so inconsequential, i haven't asked for them.

having said that, i know i exceeded the daily mini bar one one of three days last stay, with a half bottle of champagne charged at $75, and i had a few beers, some candy, and pringles, on a single day, and no mention was made, although it may have been it was under the USD200 threshold for the stay,. i never really go crazy on mini bar.

the one upside to the mini bar change is that it includes the food side now, i quite enjoy that, i wouldn't normally exceed $50 on a combination of F&B daily, so works for me, although stays with the entire family, with three children, may be different, and i don't like having to calculate the consumption.

yes, i just haven't had a stay there since the new policy, but in my case with family of five, only two will be covered, so i will be still looking at utilising FHR which last time i looked wasn't including the Willard, after it being on their list for many years, or Virtuoso may well be the solution now....

is it like FHR, in that does it cover limited basket of properties, or is it broader, include all?

because the FHR rates i've found relatively aligned with "best flex", so maybe marginally higher than "your rate" but the $100 F&B credit is well worth it, and the breakfast benefit also, when no club, like the Willard.
It depends. Some properties may be found, others not. Sometimes there are promotions like double upgrade + 1-way airport transfer, sometimes not. It is like FHR, unless the specific hotel does not show availability online and availability have to be asked by a travel manager.

At The Williard "Virtuoso Rate = Best Flexible Rate" holds. You get an upgrade, 2 full breakfasts per night, 100 USD F&B (applicable for room service (!!!!), restaurants, mini-bar), early check-in and late check out 4pm.
No minimum stay requirement.

that's good to know, thks Cielito, now that it's been off FHR, i'll utilise virtuoso next stay.

i probably should use for Barclay too, at least for short stays, where the $100 benefit is more than the difference btw the best flex, and your rate or AAA.

i've had friends say they have a 'great' agent at Virtuoso, do you know if you can reach out and request a specific agent, or is it just luck of the draw?

You can select the one you want. Not sure they have much leeway, if any at all though.

You can choose whoever you want.

There is no 100 USD F&B credit at Barclay. You get lounge access for two instead.

Anyone see the post by LoyaltyLobby that it’s $20-30K (as a rumour) based on an IC ANA manager?

Wonder what truth there is to that. Marriott asking for $20K spend (albeit across all their brands) for Ambassador seems like it could be possible for IC. Though I expect they wouldn’t actually look at the details of the numbers - such as “across all brands”, “defined benefits”, “personal concierge” (worthless as the Marriott one is), “etc” and be like “OMG GUYS WE CAN REQUIRE 20K because we are invite only so obviously MUCH better!” and run with that.

20,000 ...

I will not even target 10,000.
It is no longer worth to me, committing myself to a specific brand for a mysterious status that has experienced so many “enhancements” lately.

I thought the revenue concept should have given the whole thing more exclusivity?

I don’t care, if I am AMB next year. I book flexible anyway most times and will combine virtuoso + fhr with other brands.
The latter ensures even more than RA for my next stay in Cannes: Double upgrade, breakfast for two, 85€ F&B, airport transfer. Good with RA, I still have 45€ for the minibar ... which will not even be enough for a mini-bottle of champagne.
