Update 2023:
- it seems no new RA have been invited by IHG
- criteria for RA requalification are still unknown
- geographical location of member / country account registration seems of some impact due of covid19(restrictions/availability)
- RA is processed in weekly batches starting december 2022
- proof by nicolas75 shows RA qualification for 2024 seems to be strictly based on IC hotels only (not Regent, Kimpton, SixSenses anymore)

As per Tim O'Brien's post about IHG-corporate explaining RA criteria:

As you are aware,
Royal Ambassador is our invitation only tier with the number of members invited each year
limited to ensure our hotels are able to consistently deliver on the benefits promise,
elevating your stay experience at InterContinental Hotels & Resorts.

Although we do not currently have a published criteria for Royal Ambassador,
consideration is determined by variable activities within a members account such as
- qualified paid room nights & spend across our luxury brands (, 2023 EDIT: Post-Pandemic from 2024 InterContinental only : Pre-Pandemic also Kimpton & Regent ) ,
- member region,
- primary hotels,
- category (of the hotel class / €$ĄŁ price levels compared to currency rates / competition / city / region / country / continent )
- tenure (repeat custom / average spend at hotel)
Accompanying or adjoining reservations,
such as the additional rooms of your family etc are not included for Royal Ambassador consideration
but are included in determining Spire Elite status within IHG Rewards Club
.

* FT:IHG forum community group consensus / empirical evidence shows
- that members must have stayed at different unique hotels per city / country / region / continent
the amount of uniques needed for RA qualification is unknown but generally extended long stays at just 1 hotel do not qualify
- IHG-corporate showing keen interest in how much guests are spending €$ĄŁ at hotel's own operated F&B / Spa / transport / extra services / other venues
atacama40 has given us insights that extra spend at the hotel charged to the hotelfolio generates EQP but also flags the database as high valued spending guest
- one must have AMB to get considered for RA invitation by IHG as they seem to evaluate over a longer period the length of one's tenure / devotion / spend / undisclosed criteria at stayed IC-hotels

Update 2020 / 2021:
RA status was extended due to the global pandemic of covid19

================================================== =======

Update 2019: The RA status granted at the start of the calendar year 2017 and 2018 has been based on IC revenue. As from 2019 criteria again have become vague. RA is not achieved through IC spend only. Other, unknown elements are taken into account as well. (Fact: Some users with very high +25k IC spend were not renewed in 2019.)

Update December 2018: it looks like some accounts are proactively being renewed in December 2018, well ahead of the stated expiration of Jan 31, 2019. It is currently unknown what criteria were used, but previous years appeared to indicate around $10K++ in IC spend only.

As before, please Divide EQPs by 10 to get $$$ Spend

[Archived - no longer valid] New (Royal) Ambassador Criteria

A document was unintentionally available in the internet about changes to the (Royal) Ambassador Qualifying and Re-Qualifying criteria.
The document is available on

http://viewfromthewing.img.boardinga...Ambassador.pdf

Older discussion
There was an ongoing discussion about the criteria for some time. This thread is now closed.

update from Executive Liaison Sept, 2023,
spend at other IHG luxury brands does count for RA, and Renewal.
Brands weren't stated, but reasonable to assume Six Senses, Regent, and Kimpton.

Many thanks LOM, teach me for tuning in and dropping out.

Ok the discussed min bar cap became real ... surprise and not great. And top end suites we still have to talk nicely to folks ... again not so much of a change in reality if a bit frustrating.

I don't recall seeing any Kimpton stuff but is not really on my radar.

And the renewal rules seem .... well, more up in the air than ever it feels like?

I have not had any stays since Jan but have 27 nights across Bangkok and Hua Hin in mid April, I have to say that room allocation has been the same as always so no concerns there.

The thing that is concerning me is the mini bar as I have seen that its a 1600thb credit which will not go very far especialy in Bangkok.

I never minded Hua Hin policy of 1 time spirits as I find the club team quite generous through the day there with alcohol but I liked the soft drinks in the mini bar but now thats chargeable over 1600thb and for all of it after 4 days and Im there for 2 weeks

had a one night stay two weeks back, they told me no suite upgrades anymore, base room was $389, they gave it to me for $209, due to previous stay history, said they cld only do up to one tier under 1 bed suite, king bed. i offered them $100 supplement, they gave me a one bed suite, the suites were going for $600 plus, i was happy with that.$309, plus i gave them abt $400 F&B, so they shld have been happy with that as well..

Yeah I get that I could do that but I think having to do something like that is one of my main complaint about the changes, its an added hassle that was not there before and I simply don't have the desire to put the extra effort in for a few drinks.

It was very simple before for me personally, book 2 cats below the room I wanted (sometimes with a little bit of research) get club get minibar job done, relax and enjoy the holiday.

I have been staying at 2 ICs in Hong Kong, and even in the same area I see differences in either the operation or the interpretation of the upgrade policy.

@IC Hong Kong, booked superior junior suite, upgraded to deluxe junior suite, with a comment mentioning a one-level-upgrade policy re suite categories
In my case the assigned room is only a bit special one in that it is with a terrace, but... it does not look nice to include junior suites in the exemption list...

@IC Grand Standford Hong Kong, booked premier suite, upgraded to premier harbor view suite, with a comment mentioning a two-level upgrade policy

I understand there are some exceptions to the rules according to a guest's profile, but maybe T&Cs are interpreted differently from one property to another one
And the upgrade policy is neither a first matter nor the only one that I see such differences are occurring...

After missing out on RA despite having a net spend of over 13k at IC hotels only, I finally received my downgrade kit.

Got a Spire Amb member card, expiry date 31/01/2019.

Really?!?

They sure do not miss any occasion to make a fool out of themselves...

I can probably raise you on that. Well over a decade as RA, 101 (paid for) intercontinental nights last year, but still got kicked out. The notification was carefully crafted "Royal Ambassador downgrade" as a line on my activity page on the website, received while a RA guest in an Intercontinental on 30 January.

I've just got my new Ambassador card ......... with a January 2019 expiry date.

January saw 15 nights in 5 different Intercontinental across three continents. Since then .... (take a guess )

It's hard to understand these marketing failures in a corporation that trades on goodwill, customer satisfaction and loyalty. It's almost as though there's a will to antagonise and alienate their best customers, and gift them to competitors.

Hilton and Marriott/SPG are the winners here... they sensibly welcome in IHG refugees, offering top status.

I'm finding Hilton Honors a bit more brashly transactional than IHG, and, to be honest, the lounges are generally not so nice as those of IHG: but the blessing is transparency - i know exactly where I stand in terms of requalification. Bonvoy is taking some time to get used to

WOW 101 paid nights that seems crazy you did not get renewed, what was your spend? surely you must have been north of 13k with that many nights? Even if not I would think they would want that sort of loyalty your travels could take you more costly destinations this year or even just more nights seems very short sighted to me.

It's easy to add up stays, more complicated to work out the nights, and I'm too lazy to work out total cost. But safe to say it was over $10

There were about 50 other nights in IHG's sister brands. So that was getting on for one in every two 2018-nights sleeping between IHG sheets.

Though it's fair to point out my travel budget keeps me to entry level rooms, so perhaps (as others have suggested) there's a spend/night statistics somewhere in IHG marketing logic. If there is, they might want to look at modifying how it is applied, to avoid throwing babies out with the bathwater ...

Guys, unless you enjoy wasting time at check-in / check-out discussing unimpressive upgrades, surprising minibar charges, lack of Spire drink voucher, being told that the 20$ F&B credit is only valid for AMB etc., then you are not missing out on anything. I have yet to experience a stay in 2019 without some kind of hassle related to this.
