Update 2023:
- it seems no new RA have been invited by IHG
- criteria for RA requalification are still unknown
- geographical location of member / country account registration seems of some impact due of covid19(restrictions/availability)
- RA is processed in weekly batches starting december 2022
- proof by nicolas75 shows RA qualification for 2024 seems to be strictly based on IC hotels only (not Regent, Kimpton, SixSenses anymore)

As per Tim O'Brien's post about IHG-corporate explaining RA criteria:

As you are aware,
Royal Ambassador is our invitation only tier with the number of members invited each year
limited to ensure our hotels are able to consistently deliver on the benefits promise,
elevating your stay experience at InterContinental Hotels & Resorts.

Although we do not currently have a published criteria for Royal Ambassador,
consideration is determined by variable activities within a members account such as
- qualified paid room nights & spend across our luxury brands (, 2023 EDIT: Post-Pandemic from 2024 InterContinental only : Pre-Pandemic also Kimpton & Regent ) ,
- member region,
- primary hotels,
- category (of the hotel class / €$ĄŁ price levels compared to currency rates / competition / city / region / country / continent )
- tenure (repeat custom / average spend at hotel)
Accompanying or adjoining reservations,
such as the additional rooms of your family etc are not included for Royal Ambassador consideration
but are included in determining Spire Elite status within IHG Rewards Club
.

* FT:IHG forum community group consensus / empirical evidence shows
- that members must have stayed at different unique hotels per city / country / region / continent
the amount of uniques needed for RA qualification is unknown but generally extended long stays at just 1 hotel do not qualify
- IHG-corporate showing keen interest in how much guests are spending €$ĄŁ at hotel's own operated F&B / Spa / transport / extra services / other venues
atacama40 has given us insights that extra spend at the hotel charged to the hotelfolio generates EQP but also flags the database as high valued spending guest
- one must have AMB to get considered for RA invitation by IHG as they seem to evaluate over a longer period the length of one's tenure / devotion / spend / undisclosed criteria at stayed IC-hotels

Update 2020 / 2021:
RA status was extended due to the global pandemic of covid19

================================================== =======

Update 2019: The RA status granted at the start of the calendar year 2017 and 2018 has been based on IC revenue. As from 2019 criteria again have become vague. RA is not achieved through IC spend only. Other, unknown elements are taken into account as well. (Fact: Some users with very high +25k IC spend were not renewed in 2019.)

Update December 2018: it looks like some accounts are proactively being renewed in December 2018, well ahead of the stated expiration of Jan 31, 2019. It is currently unknown what criteria were used, but previous years appeared to indicate around $10K++ in IC spend only.

As before, please Divide EQPs by 10 to get $$$ Spend

[Archived - no longer valid] New (Royal) Ambassador Criteria

A document was unintentionally available in the internet about changes to the (Royal) Ambassador Qualifying and Re-Qualifying criteria.
The document is available on

Older discussion
There was an ongoing discussion about the criteria for some time. This thread is now closed.

update from Executive Liaison Sept, 2023,
spend at other IHG luxury brands does count for RA, and Renewal.
Brands weren't stated, but reasonable to assume Six Senses, Regent, and Kimpton.

Exactly. Tokyo is like that, where the Classic / Premier / Exec rooms are exactly the same, just on different floors, so booking Classic gets you the Exec room, which tends to surprise people. Hah.

i usually travel with family, 5 pax, so have larger space demand, hence staying in higher end suites, the $ comparison to getting two suites is often pretty similar, or just a few extra bucks to get Presidential, or second tier etc. so not getting a minimum of two suite upgrade in addition to what can be negotiated really devalues the whole RA model for me.

i can't recall the last time i booked a base level room (other than part of a negotiation, booking a higher end suite, plus a basic room to result in a combined upgrade), but i thought the minimum they were upgrading to was the club suites, or was it just Club, and they cld give you a two room upgrade?

If a stay means anything to me, I used to book a suite anyway.

I do not care how the individual houses will implement the new terms and conditions at the end. I simply do not feel like communicating with any hotel staff before the stay or during stay. I generally avoid that as much as possible. I'm just not into it.
What I have enjoyed so much about RA is, that I have had my guaranteed 2-cat upgrade and I did not need to discuss it.

Just to mention a few properties in which either suites already include club access anyway and there are restrictions on the double upgrade, because there are at least 3 upgradeable suites:

Lisbon
Madrid
London Park Lane
Malta
Istanbul

Other properties without a lounge and at least 3 non-excluded suites:
Dublin
Porto
Bordeaux
Carlton Cannes
Marseille

Only a few houses in Europe, which occurred to me spontaneously.

In fact Spire AMB and RA are entitled to nearly the same for people fancying costlier suites at those properties (yes, I forgot the incredible minibar credit, the top tier standard benefit breakfast where there is no lounge and the USD20 F&B credit RAs won't get... how could I)

Hey folks,

So, i'd like to put my foot into the ring, just as another point of view.

I've been RA for about 3 years now, I was RA for a little under a year before they introduced the changes such as guaranteed lounge access. 95% of the time I am very happy with the treatment i get as RA at hotels and I really see the benefit. I am a platinum premier with Marriott and I have a real unease about what benefits I will / will not receive at these properties, I have to fight nearly EVERYTIME to even get an upgrade. Ok I get breakfast but the upgrades are really quite shoddy in my experience. I was also Hilton Diamond and I stopped staying there because I didn't really feel I was that valued. Please note that I intend to keep Marriott as my secondary program whilst still focusing on RA. I make little to no effort to stay at other IHG properties due to lack of real value i'd rather earn those points in Marriott. I am not a fan of HI / CP. I do like Kimpton and Hotel Indigo's in general but they are almost never in locations where I need to go.

When I travel I 'always' book the lowest category room but I do almost always book it on the Flexible rate.

I travel a lot for work but also alot for personal too! Mrs Lewis42 and I like to have plenty of holidays and we take the opportunity to use the points i've earnt to supplement our lifestyle...this is what they are meant for. So I get guaranteed upgrades and lounge access etc when on a paid stay (work is paying anyway...) but I always have that unease in my gut about when on a personal stay. Keep in mind that the personal stays are far more important to me than a work stay.

For me I will stay with RA but I will continue to move my non-IC stays to Marriott and away from HI / CP etc.
1. Reducing the minibar benefit isn't great but I don't see it as a game breaker.
2. Changing the suite upgrade rules to +1 doesn't effect me so I can't complain there.
3. Adding a +1 free night award (70k point value) I do see as a good change!
4. Breakfast for 2 at properties that don't have a club lounge is also a good change.

For me what is really missing is guaranteed benefits on award stays. This is the single biggest issue "for me" in the RA program.

Last but not least, what happened about the "Club Life / Experience" at hotels that don't have a club lounge? I am going to the IC Marceau Avenue in Paris later this week so I will find out if they do anything there. I am not a fan of lounges when on personal stays, I only enjoy them for business stays. During the trial of Club Life Experience a while back I had the pleasure of trying it at both IC Amstel and IC Porto and Mrs Lewis42 and I absolutely loved it and saw a great value in it...This might also be backed up by the fact that I prefer smaller hotels than big hotels. If I had a choice I would always stay at a hotel with less than 100 rooms.

If they added Regent, Principal and Kimpton under the RA umbrella it would make it happier too.

At a recent IC Marseille stay, they said that HQ used the input from the hotels running Club Experience and will soon roll out an improved version. And they went ahead and gave me most of the Club Experience package anyways, namely free breakfast and drinks during happy hour. But not the afternoon tea, which to me was the part that wasn't working good anyways.

As for the IC Marceau, I stay there often and what you do is kindly request if you can have breakfast included as an RA and they will give this to you as an "offer" from management.

Now I’m staying at IC Amstel. Just provided free breakfast (with free flow Champagne!) only. No afternoon tea and no happy hour provided.

No, absolutely not exactly same. You seems to be not stayed at Classic Room.

The crowning of it is, that 20$ F&B credit applies for AMBs when staying on points, but RAs don't get neither F&B credit, mini-bar credit, nor lounge access. nada.

Got my RA kit today. "Your unmatched loyalty means the world to us."
Ok.

Interesting data point. I only had $6k spend at ICs this year. In December I was challenged to spend $2k at either Kimpton or ICs by the end of 2018. I did that and my RA was renewed for 2019.

interesting because I ended the year with only $6k at ICs and spent the additional $2k at Kimptons.

Perhaps IHG realise how weak the nwe RA offer is for longstanding RAs and pitched the challenge primarily to recruit new blood which might be able more excited about what RA/IC is now?

Surely they should be providing a club experience now - or USD100 credit - as in the new T&Cs?

I didn't receive any explanation about the club experience. Welcome letter mentioned old T&Cs information. However guest relations told me about 50USD mini-bar cap and complimentary breakfast.

Still staying here. Should I ask to guest relations again?
