Update 2023:
- it seems no new RA have been invited by IHG
- criteria for RA requalification are still unknown
- geographical location of member / country account registration seems of some impact due of covid19(restrictions/availability)
- RA is processed in weekly batches starting december 2022
- proof by nicolas75 shows RA qualification for 2024 seems to be strictly based on IC hotels only (not Regent, Kimpton, SixSenses anymore)

As per Tim O'Brien's post about IHG-corporate explaining RA criteria:

As you are aware,
Royal Ambassador is our invitation only tier with the number of members invited each year
limited to ensure our hotels are able to consistently deliver on the benefits promise,
elevating your stay experience at InterContinental Hotels & Resorts.

Although we do not currently have a published criteria for Royal Ambassador,
consideration is determined by variable activities within a members account such as
- qualified paid room nights & spend across our luxury brands (, 2023 EDIT: Post-Pandemic from 2024 InterContinental only : Pre-Pandemic also Kimpton & Regent ) ,
- member region,
- primary hotels,
- category (of the hotel class / €$ĄŁ price levels compared to currency rates / competition / city / region / country / continent )
- tenure (repeat custom / average spend at hotel)
Accompanying or adjoining reservations,
such as the additional rooms of your family etc are not included for Royal Ambassador consideration
but are included in determining Spire Elite status within IHG Rewards Club
.

* FT:IHG forum community group consensus / empirical evidence shows
- that members must have stayed at different unique hotels per city / country / region / continent
the amount of uniques needed for RA qualification is unknown but generally extended long stays at just 1 hotel do not qualify
- IHG-corporate showing keen interest in how much guests are spending €$ĄŁ at hotel's own operated F&B / Spa / transport / extra services / other venues
atacama40 has given us insights that extra spend at the hotel charged to the hotelfolio generates EQP but also flags the database as high valued spending guest
- one must have AMB to get considered for RA invitation by IHG as they seem to evaluate over a longer period the length of one's tenure / devotion / spend / undisclosed criteria at stayed IC-hotels

Update 2020 / 2021:
RA status was extended due to the global pandemic of covid19

================================================== =======

Update 2019: The RA status granted at the start of the calendar year 2017 and 2018 has been based on IC revenue. As from 2019 criteria again have become vague. RA is not achieved through IC spend only. Other, unknown elements are taken into account as well. (Fact: Some users with very high +25k IC spend were not renewed in 2019.)

Update December 2018: it looks like some accounts are proactively being renewed in December 2018, well ahead of the stated expiration of Jan 31, 2019. It is currently unknown what criteria were used, but previous years appeared to indicate around $10K++ in IC spend only.

As before, please Divide EQPs by 10 to get $$$ Spend

[Archived - no longer valid] New (Royal) Ambassador Criteria

A document was unintentionally available in the internet about changes to the (Royal) Ambassador Qualifying and Re-Qualifying criteria.
The document is available on

http://viewfromthewing.img.boardinga...Ambassador.pdf

Older discussion
There was an ongoing discussion about the criteria for some time. This thread is now closed.

update from Executive Liaison Sept, 2023,
spend at other IHG luxury brands does count for RA, and Renewal.
Brands weren't stated, but reasonable to assume Six Senses, Regent, and Kimpton.

Any insight onto whether the revenue from the prepaid stay will count to satisfy the $1k required spend for RA, or was that already counted and I need $1k more?

Would staff in the lounge here have any view into my account to see this? I could ask them.

Never been RA before. Would be nice to have.

Not sure what my total spend is this year, but likely already over $10k and have 60 nights posted already. Seven more in the pipeline.
the spend accrues to the account after your stay.

it hasn't been counted.

i'd bet you'll fulfill the challenge at the end of your current SIN stay.

congratulations on making the hurdle.

Great news. Thanks for sharing your insight.

Assuming you’re right, which I certainly hope you are, when should the invitation be extended? Right after completing the requirements, as with airline elite status, or is it strictly annual beginning early next year?

if consistent with the past two years shld be on or about Jan 4^

although with caveat, given it was a challenge, they may let you know sooner.

You got the answer in your email. The terms and conditions of the royal ambassador challenge say:
If you meet the criteria, you will receive a Royal Ambassador invitation by 31 January 2019 and will be upgraded to Royal Ambassador status by 4 February 2019. This offer is only valid for the person who received this email communication.
I think they will not upgrade the people before they implemented some changes to RA beginning February 1st. I.e. the minibar credit.

this may be telling us more than just about the RA Challenge................

there has been some frustration over the past two years in relation to the elimination of the preceding 30-90 day assessment period.

remember back in time when we would be evaluated for the previous year at the end of Oct, if we didn't qualify, they'd evaluate again, at the end of Nov for the preceding year, and then again, if still not qualified, at the end of Dec. a few bites at the cherry.

in the past two years it has been as at the end of Dec, and then announced Jan 4th. with uncertainty, not knowing if qualified, or re-qualified, what to do about forward bookings for the month of Jan.

i speculate now that they've extended RA from Dec 31 to Jan 30, they may be evaluating at end of Dec ( possibly announcing Jan 4th), and again, at end of Jan, with announcement at beginning of Feb ( if not qualified by Jan 4th)

at least that way, those not qualified by Jan 4th, could alter most of their Jan bookings (if refundable) to other groups in need be, or leave bookings in place in hope of qualifying by end of Jan. IHG cld set challenges if not qualified by end of December, for Jan stays.

I hope you are right. I would be little mad if they just postpone on month.

So I didn't receive the challenge email... I have over $12k IC spend this year and around 65 IC nights at 12 different ICs in 6 different countries. Had one Kimpton stay over the summer. Wondering if I should start worrying?

I think you’re ok. Your total spend and variety of different IC’s will be similar to mine (AFTER the challenge is completed).

although with caveat, given it was a challenge, they may let you know sooner.
This is one of the conflicting aspects to the RA programme. I’m at $14.5k for 2018, and had booked a « staycation » in my home city as well as a long weekend in Asia, both in Jan, to celebrate my (hoped for) new status

So if next year is announced in Feb...or if the assumed goalposts for qualification have moved, I can’t genuinely complain as IHG have not published the 4 Jan date, nor the qualification threshold.

And yet I’ll cancel my Jan stays and $2k of business to IHG. It won’t get postponed or move to another programme, it’s just gone. A lose lose situation, really.

In Jan 2018, Saltlake initially processed RA status as in 2017 on 4th Jan with expiry 31Dec, but then circa 18th Jan this got changed to expiry 31Jan.

In my mind an improvement, avoids those Ambassadors needing their Xmas->New Year onwards (say checkin 24th Dec checkout 5th Jan stays that post 10th Jan) to be picked up. Plus existing bordeline-renewing RA's can book into new year (Jan) knowing they get RA benefits.

The downside is non-RA Plain-Ambassadors in 2018 who believe they qualify as RA for 2019 , will not get RA on Jan4th as in 2017 and 2018, but Feb 1st or thereabouts, so not get the extra RA benefits for Jan2019 so may hold off booking costlier IC nights in Jan2019 in favour of cheaper non-IC nights. Maybe not worth saving as the Jan2019 IC $$$ spend counts towards renewing RA for 2020.

i'm suggesting if you've made the hurdle by end of Dec, you'll know on Jan 4th, if our minds are in line with IHG ( a scary thought) you will qualify with your spend for 2018, and receive notification on Jan 4th, so you have no worry about the possibility of a second bite of the cherry during the month of January.

there's a reasonable chance they'll revert to their old playbook, time will tell.

i guess we'll have a better idea around Jan 4th.

we may see the first round of renewals on or about Jan 4th for those that have hit the hurdle by end of December, and the second round, in early February, for those that have hit it by end of January.

it would be more sensible than the past two years.

better still, they could revert to the entire historical playbook, and evaluate at the end of Oct, Nov, and Dec.

Obviously I’m hoping this is how it works out.

I’d assumed that extending membership this year to 31st Jan was to pacify existing RAs nervous about booking during the limbo period before 4 Jan announcements.

If the RA year end moving to 31 Jan also means requalification moving to 4 Feb, the they haven’t fixed the 4 day gap, they’ve just moved by a month.

Yes, that's why i'm hopeful they are giving us two bites at the cherry. irrespective of whether the hurdle is accomplished by end of Dec (announced Jan 4), or end of Jan (announced Feb 4?), i would expect the year end to remain end of Jan for all.

can't see why they don't do what they used to, evaluating end of Oct, Nov, and Dec.

I don't see any reason to think there is two bites at RA. The spend at IC still needs to be the calendar year 1st Jan - 31st Dec nights. If you fall short of the RA spend target during 2018 calendar year it is false to conclude that Jan2019 IC spend would be counted if your 2018 spend is too low for RA level.

Issue with processing on 4th Jan is any 'borderline' cases staying at IC on multinight Xmas-Jan stays into early Jan2019 would not get nights posted and thus counted until maybe Jan 10th at earliest. Thus it makes sense to me that Saltlake delay processing until later in January, and as a consequence set processing as 1st Feb with RA expiry 31st Jan rather than 31st Dec seems very reasonable.

For current RAs who know they won't requalify for 2019, as this is first year with 31st Jan expiry, I would not rely on that RA status to not dissapear mid January onwards. This afterall is why other hotel loyalty schemes whilst using calendar year qualification, process status feb/march, eg Marriott
