Update 2023:
- it seems no new RA have been invited by IHG
- criteria for RA requalification are still unknown
- geographical location of member / country account registration seems of some impact due of covid19(restrictions/availability)
- RA is processed in weekly batches starting december 2022
- proof by nicolas75 shows RA qualification for 2024 seems to be strictly based on IC hotels only (not Regent, Kimpton, SixSenses anymore)

As per Tim O'Brien's post about IHG-corporate explaining RA criteria:

As you are aware,
Royal Ambassador is our invitation only tier with the number of members invited each year
limited to ensure our hotels are able to consistently deliver on the benefits promise,
elevating your stay experience at InterContinental Hotels & Resorts.

Although we do not currently have a published criteria for Royal Ambassador,
consideration is determined by variable activities within a members account such as
- qualified paid room nights & spend across our luxury brands (, 2023 EDIT: Post-Pandemic from 2024 InterContinental only : Pre-Pandemic also Kimpton & Regent ) ,
- member region,
- primary hotels,
- category (of the hotel class / €$ĽŁ price levels compared to currency rates / competition / city / region / country / continent )
- tenure (repeat custom / average spend at hotel)
Accompanying or adjoining reservations,
such as the additional rooms of your family etc are not included for Royal Ambassador consideration
but are included in determining Spire Elite status within IHG Rewards Club
.

* FT:IHG forum community group consensus / empirical evidence shows
- that members must have stayed at different unique hotels per city / country / region / continent
the amount of uniques needed for RA qualification is unknown but generally extended long stays at just 1 hotel do not qualify
- IHG-corporate showing keen interest in how much guests are spending €$ĽŁ at hotel's own operated F&B / Spa / transport / extra services / other venues
atacama40 has given us insights that extra spend at the hotel charged to the hotelfolio generates EQP but also flags the database as high valued spending guest
- one must have AMB to get considered for RA invitation by IHG as they seem to evaluate over a longer period the length of one's tenure / devotion / spend / undisclosed criteria at stayed IC-hotels

Update 2020 / 2021:
RA status was extended due to the global pandemic of covid19

================================================== =======

Update 2019: The RA status granted at the start of the calendar year 2017 and 2018 has been based on IC revenue. As from 2019 criteria again have become vague. RA is not achieved through IC spend only. Other, unknown elements are taken into account as well. (Fact: Some users with very high +25k IC spend were not renewed in 2019.)

Update December 2018: it looks like some accounts are proactively being renewed in December 2018, well ahead of the stated expiration of Jan 31, 2019. It is currently unknown what criteria were used, but previous years appeared to indicate around $10K++ in IC spend only.

As before, please Divide EQPs by 10 to get $$$ Spend

[Archived - no longer valid] New (Royal) Ambassador Criteria

A document was unintentionally available in the internet about changes to the (Royal) Ambassador Qualifying and Re-Qualifying criteria.
The document is available on

http://viewfromthewing.img.boardinga...Ambassador.pdf

Older discussion
There was an ongoing discussion about the criteria for some time. This thread is now closed.

update from Executive Liaison Sept, 2023,
spend at other IHG luxury brands does count for RA, and Renewal.
Brands weren't stated, but reasonable to assume Six Senses, Regent, and Kimpton.

I see today that I've been remade an RA after downgrade. I also see that the status update on the 4th Jan has changed to so that it reads royal ambassador renewal and then on the 16th RA status.

Confusing times, but I'll take it.

They are being exceedingly efficient in that regard.

It's a great program, however. Considerably better than Hyatt or Starwood/Marriott in my opinion and with better hotels.

Wife always has a big smile when I tell her we're staying at an IC. Wish the benefits were extended to CPs and Kimpton
when there are no ICs in the area.

yes, particularly given the small footprint^

Lifetime RA would also make the program more competitive.........

I am not sure it is anymore, it definitely used to be but following the changes last year it seems much more comparable especially the upgrade cap at many properties, which makes it far less worthwhile to pay for better rooms and suites. I can categorically say that I had better experiences overall in 2017 with Starwood and Marriott than I had in IC's as a RA and far better value for money. My suite upgrade rate at Marriott ran to around 90% of my stays rather than the less than 10% I had at IC's.

There are some really crappy IC's in amongst the good too, I spent my time in more than my fair share of them last year in Amsterdam, Doha, Frankfurt, London (both), Bangkok etc. Room upgrades seem to be worse, the footprint is tiny and doesn't really meet my total needs meaning that I NEED to have status in another chain. The only remaining unique and worthwhile benefit is the minibar and I am coming to the conclusion it really isn't worth that much.

Despite renewing RA I still have no IC stays booked this year and I am not hugely inclined to book any.

The upgrade cap is theory. The properties are not obligated to upgrade you two categrories into a presidential but there was no any obligation to do so before. But they still can and do. Under the old regime you were entitled to "a" suite. This did not require any exclusions. Under the new regime you are entitled to a strict two category upgrade. This requires strict exclusions. In 2018 i have 12 IC nights year to date and 7 of these were spend with upgrades to "excluded" suites, one with a three category upgrade and four with a generous suite upgrade (for small cash) on an award stay over NYE (cash price was 3k USD, I paid 600k plus points). I cannot complain and got the feeling, the programme got better and more predictable. Happy to be renewed.

That is very much property dependant. The majority of my stays last year saw upgrades to rooms not noticeably better than the ones I paid for. That has been pretty consistent for me the only honourable exception being the IC Hong Kong. Happy to be renewed and have options this year but I do not believe the programme is what it was and that it is worth jumping through opaque hoops to renew in future.

I can't see any party disagreeing with the notion - except perhaps IHG, and the hotels .

The notion of no-longer-frequent travellers with time on their hands selecting off-season rates for weeks away in suites with club lounge and mini-bar as comforts will send shudders through the corporate teams

I think the best lifetime award you could expect might be Spire. Something of marginal utility for guests, and little inconvenience to hotel management. And even then there'd have to something like the Lufthansa caveat restricting the duration of the award by granting it only to those over 60 years of age. Knowing IHG, that would be upped to 75....

why should this send shudders? Off season traveller booking suites and using the facilities a hotel needs to provide anyhow are the guests a hotel is longing for. A suite sold off season with 50'percent discount is better than an empty suite. Starwood and Hilton understood this.

IHG is unique amongst the major international programs in not having lifetime top-tier status.

If granting lifetime top-tier status is as economically dreadful for the chain and hotels as you suggest, I suspect that IHG won't be so alone in not having it.

But then again, the IHG Rewards/Ambassador program is pretty deficient in terms of the spread of tiers and the benefits attached to each, so perhaps the mistake is pitching IHG up against the other major programs in the first place.

Hotels are perfectly free to dump suites at the rates of standard rooms. They can even throw in lounge access, breakfast, afternoon teas, cocktails, canapés and free mini-bars to attract the elusive prize of the off season traveller. But it's a marketing strategy that has yet to catch on.

IHG had a tough enough job persuading ICs to offer "universal" club access and other refinements to RAs. The quid pro quo was convincing the hotel owners and managers that RAs were contributing substantial revenue to the IC pool. The reaction of that hard-nosed crew to news that they'd be asked to provide the same high level facilities for a further twenty, thirty or more years to guests no longer satisfying any revenue requirements isn't hard to imagine.

I'm not suggesting that all life-time RAs would behave in an opportunistic way, but human nature being what it is there'd likely be a significant subset out to maximise their programme benefits over a couple of decades.
