Update 2023:
- it seems no new RA have been invited by IHG
- criteria for RA requalification are still unknown
- geographical location of member / country account registration seems of some impact due of covid19(restrictions/availability)
- RA is processed in weekly batches starting december 2022
- proof by nicolas75 shows RA qualification for 2024 seems to be strictly based on IC hotels only (not Regent, Kimpton, SixSenses anymore)

As per Tim O'Brien's post about IHG-corporate explaining RA criteria:

As you are aware,
Royal Ambassador is our invitation only tier with the number of members invited each year
limited to ensure our hotels are able to consistently deliver on the benefits promise,
elevating your stay experience at InterContinental Hotels & Resorts.

Although we do not currently have a published criteria for Royal Ambassador,
consideration is determined by variable activities within a members account such as
- qualified paid room nights & spend across our luxury brands (, 2023 EDIT: Post-Pandemic from 2024 InterContinental only : Pre-Pandemic also Kimpton & Regent ) ,
- member region,
- primary hotels,
- category (of the hotel class / €$ĄŁ price levels compared to currency rates / competition / city / region / country / continent )
- tenure (repeat custom / average spend at hotel)
Accompanying or adjoining reservations,
such as the additional rooms of your family etc are not included for Royal Ambassador consideration
but are included in determining Spire Elite status within IHG Rewards Club
.

* FT:IHG forum community group consensus / empirical evidence shows
- that members must have stayed at different unique hotels per city / country / region / continent
the amount of uniques needed for RA qualification is unknown but generally extended long stays at just 1 hotel do not qualify
- IHG-corporate showing keen interest in how much guests are spending €$ĄŁ at hotel's own operated F&B / Spa / transport / extra services / other venues
atacama40 has given us insights that extra spend at the hotel charged to the hotelfolio generates EQP but also flags the database as high valued spending guest
- one must have AMB to get considered for RA invitation by IHG as they seem to evaluate over a longer period the length of one's tenure / devotion / spend / undisclosed criteria at stayed IC-hotels

Update 2020 / 2021:
RA status was extended due to the global pandemic of covid19

================================================== =======

Update 2019: The RA status granted at the start of the calendar year 2017 and 2018 has been based on IC revenue. As from 2019 criteria again have become vague. RA is not achieved through IC spend only. Other, unknown elements are taken into account as well. (Fact: Some users with very high +25k IC spend were not renewed in 2019.)

Update December 2018: it looks like some accounts are proactively being renewed in December 2018, well ahead of the stated expiration of Jan 31, 2019. It is currently unknown what criteria were used, but previous years appeared to indicate around $10K++ in IC spend only.

As before, please Divide EQPs by 10 to get $$$ Spend

[Archived - no longer valid] New (Royal) Ambassador Criteria

A document was unintentionally available in the internet about changes to the (Royal) Ambassador Qualifying and Re-Qualifying criteria.
The document is available on

http://viewfromthewing.img.boardinga...Ambassador.pdf

Older discussion
There was an ongoing discussion about the criteria for some time. This thread is now closed.

update from Executive Liaison Sept, 2023,
spend at other IHG luxury brands does count for RA, and Renewal.
Brands weren't stated, but reasonable to assume Six Senses, Regent, and Kimpton.

yes, and if every person in the world got that email, it would be even more...

How do we know it was in error though. I reported it here as an error, since it felt strange to requalify for me, but I never got a corrective email unlike the people here who reported getting a downgrade email. Personally, I never received information about losing RA, it just happened automatically on Jan 4. I wasn’t surprised though, because of my 2017 pattern. But maybe they think I’ve been a good customer for many years and allow me to have a dip one year, I don’t know.

Here is a summary of my issues:

Jan 3 - Checked the app and I was still RA.
Jan 7 - Received email from IC Saigon welcoming me as RA
Jan 8 - Received email from IC Saigon welcoming me as Spire Amb
Jan 9 - Checked into IC Saigon and was informed that I had been downgraded.
Jan 10 - Checked out from IC Saigon
Jan 12 - Received email confirming my RA renewal
Jan 12 - Checked into IC GS HK and was granted RA privileges upon showing the team the email. They mentioned this has been happening to many guests
Jan 15 - Checked in IC SZ and again had to discuss with the team. RA privileges granted after a bit of an internal debate between the staff.

I've called the IHG line twice (12 and 15 Jan) and they said they needed more time to review my case. I should be just over $10k with the correct currency exchange rates and my late December stay in Paris. I also have around $3500 worth of stays booked in January so I'm hoping they take this into consideration.

For those who are downgraded some advance communication would have been nice. What a disastrous handling of this!

I'll update here once I know the final result.
RA confirmed this morning through December 2018.

Couldn't it just be that the requalification criteria are softer?

04/01: first review on all ambassador / RA accounts, if > threshold --> RA
approx 12/01: second review on RA population of prior year versus somewhat lower threshold --> RA requalification

Guess we will never know. IHG's weird ways are sometimes also rewarding for some. No need to envy the ones that slipped through upon second review...

scubaccr, in the email they told me that my RA status is good for 31 Jan 2019 but my e-card shows only Dec 2018. Do you it's good idea to call and claim the extra month? LOL

Relax my friend, I think what you said is not accurate:

1- I believe the error email was sent to only RA member who didn't meet the criteria. So if we assume that each downgraded RA will given a chance to maintain status this year, the worse scenario would be an increase of (0.5~.08%) in RA numbers from total AMB majority. (RA = 1% of AMB members).

2- Zero upgrades and etc....? Well I don't think so. Hyatt and Hilton offered a top level status match before and everyone eventually survived!

3- I've been a good RA member for many years, spent good money, was patient on their missing nights/points/kit/criteria and etc.. with IHG.
So from a marketing point of view; where is the harm of bringing Voucher and other RA's business to us again?
 scubaccr won't be happy?
He's already in our basket.

After an email to CEO/exec office, after 1 hour an reply with apologies and royal to end 2018. With 13k+7k spend should have gone automatic but due to hack wasn't done.
Emailing took to long time (3 weeks since hack) so this solved it. now i can plan my IC stays.

Without any email communication back to IHG after the downgrade and the subsequent welcome back letter, my account now shows Royal Ambassador again and the activity Royal Ambassador Renewal. Nice.

[QUOTE=scubaccr;29301888]Would be interested in your estimated usd??++ (ie before taxes spend) qualifying rate spend at IC and non-IC spend ? And from any others that did indeed get RA from the supposed mistake email.
So I just did a rough estimate and surprised myself. 84 nights in IHG of which 38 were IC at Singapore, Seoul Grand Parnas and Coex, Tokyo ANA and Osaka. My estimated spend worked out at 10,850 USD at IC only. More than 75% of my spend was in the second half of the year at IC. Not sure if that made any difference.

Also RA again. I did a quick check on spend, as posted earlier here their FX rates are off. Looks like I was pretty close spend wise after all.
I am very glad with RA again and subsequently they will see plenty of business from me this year.

The usual RA cluster***k January.
I turned up at the Sydney IC on the 4th and was welcomed as an RA.
I then discovered during my stay that I was no longer an RA and my benefits were no longer available as my lounge key didn't work.
Showed them my confirmation that said RA and got my benefits back. Was billed mini-bar on checkout and had to get them to remove.
Received a January statement on the 11th that said I was an RA, but website said I was just an A.
Called Customer Service on the 11th who said I had been downgraded!. I had 67 nights, 7 different IC properties and $18.5K spend (most of which was at ICs)
Asked them to send me the breakdown of my spend and stays. They said it would take 3-5 days. Didn't ask for a review (though I guess they probably figured that was implied)
Received an email on the 13th saying RA Renewal. Never received any details.
Received an update on my account that said on the 16th "Royal Ambassador Status" and one now appearing backdated the 4th saying "Royal Ambassador Renewal"
Expiry apparently January 31st 2019.
---
All in all very happy to get renewed but amazed at the Byzantine nature of this.
The moral of the story, be polite get the facts from their accounts department and I suspect that if you are borderline but with previous good history they'll look kindly on you.

I wasn't even borderline and I got renewed. My estimate is approx 30 IC nights and $5000 IC spend. I didn't even make it up to Spire last year. As posted above, I never received info about being downgraded, it just happened on the 4th. Then I got the email and yesterday my account said RA etc.

if you haven't got a response from Canty?, and you're over the USD10K net hurdle, maybe it's worth trying Barr, no downside^
