Update 2023:
- it seems no new RA have been invited by IHG
- criteria for RA requalification are still unknown
- geographical location of member / country account registration seems of some impact due of covid19(restrictions/availability)
- RA is processed in weekly batches starting december 2022
- proof by nicolas75 shows RA qualification for 2024 seems to be strictly based on IC hotels only (not Regent, Kimpton, SixSenses anymore)

As per Tim O'Brien's post about IHG-corporate explaining RA criteria:

As you are aware,
Royal Ambassador is our invitation only tier with the number of members invited each year
limited to ensure our hotels are able to consistently deliver on the benefits promise,
elevating your stay experience at InterContinental Hotels & Resorts.

Although we do not currently have a published criteria for Royal Ambassador,
consideration is determined by variable activities within a members account such as
- qualified paid room nights & spend across our luxury brands (, 2023 EDIT: Post-Pandemic from 2024 InterContinental only : Pre-Pandemic also Kimpton & Regent ) ,
- member region,
- primary hotels,
- category (of the hotel class / €$ĄŁ price levels compared to currency rates / competition / city / region / country / continent )
- tenure (repeat custom / average spend at hotel)
Accompanying or adjoining reservations,
such as the additional rooms of your family etc are not included for Royal Ambassador consideration
but are included in determining Spire Elite status within IHG Rewards Club
.

* FT:IHG forum community group consensus / empirical evidence shows
- that members must have stayed at different unique hotels per city / country / region / continent
the amount of uniques needed for RA qualification is unknown but generally extended long stays at just 1 hotel do not qualify
- IHG-corporate showing keen interest in how much guests are spending €$ĄŁ at hotel's own operated F&B / Spa / transport / extra services / other venues
atacama40 has given us insights that extra spend at the hotel charged to the hotelfolio generates EQP but also flags the database as high valued spending guest
- one must have AMB to get considered for RA invitation by IHG as they seem to evaluate over a longer period the length of one's tenure / devotion / spend / undisclosed criteria at stayed IC-hotels

Update 2020 / 2021:
RA status was extended due to the global pandemic of covid19

================================================== =======

Update 2019: The RA status granted at the start of the calendar year 2017 and 2018 has been based on IC revenue. As from 2019 criteria again have become vague. RA is not achieved through IC spend only. Other, unknown elements are taken into account as well. (Fact: Some users with very high +25k IC spend were not renewed in 2019.)

Update December 2018: it looks like some accounts are proactively being renewed in December 2018, well ahead of the stated expiration of Jan 31, 2019. It is currently unknown what criteria were used, but previous years appeared to indicate around $10K++ in IC spend only.

As before, please Divide EQPs by 10 to get $$$ Spend

[Archived - no longer valid] New (Royal) Ambassador Criteria

A document was unintentionally available in the internet about changes to the (Royal) Ambassador Qualifying and Re-Qualifying criteria.
The document is available on

http://viewfromthewing.img.boardinga...Ambassador.pdf

Older discussion
There was an ongoing discussion about the criteria for some time. This thread is now closed.

update from Executive Liaison Sept, 2023,
spend at other IHG luxury brands does count for RA, and Renewal.
Brands weren't stated, but reasonable to assume Six Senses, Regent, and Kimpton.

I should as it looks reach this year 52 IC nights, about 27 other brands and another 13 reward nights (of which 6 in IC's). That's 92 for spire but Royal?
Turnover, total should get to 17000 USD of which approx 12000 USD in IC's.

let me put it this way, if this doesn't get me RA status again I'll go do a fast track on Marriot/SPG and put all my nights there.
unless IHG guaranteeds Club for Spire regular Amb where there is club. i just want club that's my main thing. the free minibar is nice too but i just want club as marriot/spg offers too.

I re-checked my IHG/RA card image on the IHG Android-Phone-App late today (1st Nov) and no change..... still exp 30th Dec as per October change from 1st Dec. With us$14k (ex tax) IC based EQP I would hope to renew.

I plan to next check again on 1st/2nd Dec to see if IHG refresh requalifying RAs 1month out like they did under the variabble renewal date model.

I have just examined the given data in the PDF-presentation and come to following conclusion: If Ambassadors generates totally over $170M in profit there should be nearly 85000 Ambassadors considering the profit per Ambassador is ca. $2000.
Assuming that the cost for Ambassadors is $93M in total, you get about $1100 cost per Ambassador. Regarding to the profit per Royal Ambassador ($5800), average RA generated $6900≈$7000 in IC-revenue in 2013. Does this make sense?

If that is true, then the Great Hoopla of 2017 certainly worked for them, as they got a bunch of RAs to jump up and down and suddenly more than double that spend this year. That'd be almost as good as the Great Concorde hoax (where they asked businesspeople how much they thought they paid for tickets, and it turned out they could raise fares without anyone really caring).

I find that bordering on blackmail, especially considering the benefits are so random, but it's the hamster wheel we all signed up for...

It’s nothing like blackmail. Simply good (although quite standard) marketing practice. Certainly produces better results than the rules-driven clarity of qualification criteria that many on here clammer for. I commend IHG.

The sarcasm shines through rather well. I commend you. ^

Assuming that the cost for Ambassadors is $93M in total, you get about $1100 cost per Ambassador. Regarding to the profit per Royal Ambassador ($5800), average RA generated $6900≈$7000 in IC-revenue in 2013. Does this make sense?
The statistic I remember was Ambassadors give IHG/hotels more profit per night than RA's, but lesser total over a year as RAs have substantially more nights each on average. Report is really about IHG/IC hotel brand generating greater ADR per RA

Not so sure of the IHG presentations accounting, as no direct %age link between revenue and profit per Amb/RA guest per hotel, and there is also a difference between IHG cut (fees+commission+$200-Amb-Fees) ie IHG's profit and an individual hotels profit.

Yes under older 20/60 RA target, 20 x $150 IC's plus 40x $100 CP/HI/HIE could get one RA status with us$7k (or even less) spend though my own spend usually falls in range $12-15k/Year

Glad it amused you, however there was no sarcasm.

I found it odd that I just received my new RA card from IHG just in time for it to expire in 20 days time? (no points or luggage tags included)

however like other RAs the app card shows EXP: 30 DEC 2017, not 01 DEC like on card

I think the presentation is very clear: Profit = ADR+(non-room)+F&B - costs, when costs = F&B benefits, points cost, cost to turn room, opportunity cost of upgrade benefit delivery

None of the variables used in my calculation depend on the exact distribution RA/AMB.

Yes, under the old criteria it was very simple to get the status the low cost way.
Nevertheless, if my premise is correct, the average RA spent ca. $7000 in ICs only in 2013, not CP/HI(X). So if my ~ $12000 net spend in ICs in 2017 are not recognised, I'll do a fast track status match in SPG.

Also just a little bit worried that many "adjusted" and "overlapping" stays may be ignored by the magnificent IT of IHG.

agree about the overlapping and non-qualifying stays issue, I have literally needed to contact IHG Rewards like 20 times in 2017

big waste of energy

Not chance at all for me to renew this year with a lowly 20 IC nights at 5 properties, but a decent spend around 8K.
However, I did notice in the app I appear to have already been given Ambassador for next year...
