Update 2023:
- it seems no new RA have been invited by IHG
- criteria for RA requalification are still unknown
- geographical location of member / country account registration seems of some impact due of covid19(restrictions/availability)
- RA is processed in weekly batches starting december 2022
- proof by nicolas75 shows RA qualification for 2024 seems to be strictly based on IC hotels only (not Regent, Kimpton, SixSenses anymore)

As per Tim O'Brien's post about IHG-corporate explaining RA criteria:

As you are aware,
Royal Ambassador is our invitation only tier with the number of members invited each year
limited to ensure our hotels are able to consistently deliver on the benefits promise,
elevating your stay experience at InterContinental Hotels & Resorts.

Although we do not currently have a published criteria for Royal Ambassador,
consideration is determined by variable activities within a members account such as
- qualified paid room nights & spend across our luxury brands (, 2023 EDIT: Post-Pandemic from 2024 InterContinental only : Pre-Pandemic also Kimpton & Regent ) ,
- member region,
- primary hotels,
- category (of the hotel class / €$¥£ price levels compared to currency rates / competition / city / region / country / continent )
- tenure (repeat custom / average spend at hotel)
Accompanying or adjoining reservations,
such as the additional rooms of your family etc are not included for Royal Ambassador consideration
but are included in determining Spire Elite status within IHG Rewards Club
.

* FT:IHG forum community group consensus / empirical evidence shows
- that members must have stayed at different unique hotels per city / country / region / continent
the amount of uniques needed for RA qualification is unknown but generally extended long stays at just 1 hotel do not qualify
- IHG-corporate showing keen interest in how much guests are spending €$¥£ at hotel's own operated F&B / Spa / transport / extra services / other venues
atacama40 has given us insights that extra spend at the hotel charged to the hotelfolio generates EQP but also flags the database as high valued spending guest
- one must have AMB to get considered for RA invitation by IHG as they seem to evaluate over a longer period the length of one's tenure / devotion / spend / undisclosed criteria at stayed IC-hotels

Update 2020 / 2021:
RA status was extended due to the global pandemic of covid19

================================================== =======

Update 2019: The RA status granted at the start of the calendar year 2017 and 2018 has been based on IC revenue. As from 2019 criteria again have become vague. RA is not achieved through IC spend only. Other, unknown elements are taken into account as well. (Fact: Some users with very high +25k IC spend were not renewed in 2019.)

Update December 2018: it looks like some accounts are proactively being renewed in December 2018, well ahead of the stated expiration of Jan 31, 2019. It is currently unknown what criteria were used, but previous years appeared to indicate around $10K++ in IC spend only.

As before, please Divide EQPs by 10 to get $$$ Spend

[Archived - no longer valid] New (Royal) Ambassador Criteria

A document was unintentionally available in the internet about changes to the (Royal) Ambassador Qualifying and Re-Qualifying criteria.
The document is available on

Older discussion
There was an ongoing discussion about the criteria for some time. This thread is now closed.

update from Executive Liaison Sept, 2023,
spend at other IHG luxury brands does count for RA, and Renewal.
Brands weren't stated, but reasonable to assume Six Senses, Regent, and Kimpton.

During checkin in Vienna, Istanbul and Berlin (this and last week) I have been informed by the stuff about ongoing changes of the AMB / RA programme (note: I didn't ask for that information).
All three lounge manager said, that the new RA criteria are not defined up to now. But they expect much fewer RA members in 2017++.
They confirmed the new qualifying timeframe (1.1-31.12) and the more standardised upgrade schemes for AMB and RA (+2/+club).
e.g. Club supplement for AMB will be standard rate - 20%. This is why the Club supplement at IC Berlin has switched from Eur 65 to Eur 88 for AMB recently. For RA its still Eur 50.

Depends on the property (like IC WAW 2 Cat up = suite), and actually it used to be in the T&C that RA had a guaranteed 2 level upgrade. Then the wording changed to "Exec room or suite" and now it is going back to 2 level.

Personally at IC I much prefer the large Execs over the smaller non refurbished suite. In the end, as it should be, a hotel should reward someone who stays a lot with them over a maiden RA stay.

Whilst I appreciate in Asia even before the 1st Sep 2016 changes, us RAs mosty received foc Lounge Access (IC MNL, IC BKK, IC Danang, IC Hanoi, IC HKG, IC SIN etc) in RoW it was very much rarer. as suc outside Asia I always either book club-room initially OR upsell depending on my knowlege of individual IC hotels rate difference v upsell regards lounge access

The downside for myself and I suspect 50% of long-standing RAs is that we currently often book a Club Room with Lounge Access (or higher room type with club access), so that we get a nice suite rather than one of Exec Room / Club Room (nominally Deluxe/Exec with Lounge access) or a run of te mill single large room Junior Suite

A substantial part of rate difference can be £70/euro 90 /us$100 or more for lounge access which will now be an RA benefit of both Paid and award.

I won't say this is cb rate expense is a totally naff idea, as eg IC-KUL. even before September t+c rewrite, booking Club Room, I get 2cat upgrade to one of the 4x lovely removated large ambassador suites... or if a late checkin/early checkout transit stay, in a base room IC KUL gave lounge anyway.

....
I am just wondering if those IC's who bumped RA's booking a basic room upto a J/suite w/o Lounge access asking the RA to upsell the lounge fee, will now simply provide a club room v current J/S if lounge access is an RA benefit

And of course those excellent IC's that already go above and beyond minimums, whether a big suite upgrade or foc lounge or even both (eg Hanoi Westlake, IC Saigon) for RAs will probably continue to do so.

I admit it will be nice not to get only a 1cat upgrade in future when booking any of club/j-S/suite at certain hotels...
(subject to a much lengthier IC Suites by hotel, named suites exclusion list )

BUT playing Devils advocate here... What about IC hotels lacking a lounge ... should they be required to gve RA's a +3cat rather than +2cat upgrade in lieu of a lounge OR foc Restaurant Breakfast (thinking IC Amstel here ! )

Thinking Europe, I only want to upsell lounge at ... Park Lane / Budapest / Berlin, Cairo CityStars ..... as I get free at Paris-LG (as a regular). Kiev (all RA), Bucharest (nowadays choice but still get both suite+lounge), Athens (Choice Club v Suite)

Ex-Europe for me is Asia (I don't usually do ME/USA/CHINA), only place i upsell Lounge is IC-GS(hk) which gives J-S/Lounge choice.
All other Asia IC's giave me lounge befor Sep2016... IC-HK/IC-SIN/IC-KUL/IC-MNL (RIP)/IC-BKK/IC-SGN/IC-HANOI/IC-DANANG

For RA its still Eur 50.
i suspect that was the major selling point to the property owners, ie volume of RA's will be well down, so net savings, notwithstanding lounge access policy.

Was searching for Intercontinental hotels and accidentally went to the IHG corporate web site.

There's an article on the front page called 'The foundations of loyalty' .... it's 76 minutes long but if you have the misfortunate to be in a long powerpoint presentation then you should be able to get through it.

I love the line where the IHG lady says "I want guests to get the Holiday Inn experience but still be recognized as a member"

Like I assumed. IHG's competent people work at the hotels while at their headquarters they let a bunch of interns try to do the job.

IHG are never good at making promised program announcements on time, or if on time meaningful.

So on top of the Spire introduction with virtually no in-hotel benefits v Platinum, and promise after promise of announcements, eg Spire introduced Jul2015, benefits initially promised Jan2016, which became we'll announce in NOV2016 (which didn't happen either... suprise suprise)

I just wonder if IHG can manage the RA program and RA qualification comms in a good and propper manner???!!! I highly doubt it. They never even contacted those of us whose Amb calendar years were changed.

Not a good show by IHG as far as I am concerned, informing us in Jan2017 regards RA yeae/qual changes is far too late.

I/we need to kow now so as to plan my/our Jan+Feb nights and we have no idea if like the "leaked pdf states" onky IC hotel spend counts for RAs in 2017 so can I book my usual non-IC IHG hotel's OR if no IC stay at HH brands if no convenient locdal IC.

Scubaccr I think our complaints are falling on deaf ears.

Im wondering why I bothered to do bed runs when I could have done the same for spg ( i will loose platinum this year needed anohter 12 stays)

lucky I have Hyatt Diamond for next year will have to concentrate on that for the future at least they have a goal for us to work on.

How can the volume of RA's be well down if RA's make up the top 1% of IHG members?

That would imply a huge culling of IHG rewards members or RA's being a lesser percentage than the top 1%.

The removal of the referral certificate cut numbers in half, then the revised re qualification requiring 75 nights further reduces that figure.

rapidex's point was presumably that when the qualification criteria is expressed as a fixed percentage of a larger pool, the only way of reducing the number of those who qualify is to reduce the size of the pool (given that the percentage will not change)?

Can't believe this smoke screen nonsense is still ongoing, by the way...
