Update 2023:
- it seems no new RA have been invited by IHG
- criteria for RA requalification are still unknown
- geographical location of member / country account registration seems of some impact due of covid19(restrictions/availability)
- RA is processed in weekly batches starting december 2022
- proof by nicolas75 shows RA qualification for 2024 seems to be strictly based on IC hotels only (not Regent, Kimpton, SixSenses anymore)

As per Tim O'Brien's post about IHG-corporate explaining RA criteria:

As you are aware,
Royal Ambassador is our invitation only tier with the number of members invited each year
limited to ensure our hotels are able to consistently deliver on the benefits promise,
elevating your stay experience at InterContinental Hotels & Resorts.

Although we do not currently have a published criteria for Royal Ambassador,
consideration is determined by variable activities within a members account such as
- qualified paid room nights & spend across our luxury brands (, 2023 EDIT: Post-Pandemic from 2024 InterContinental only : Pre-Pandemic also Kimpton & Regent ) ,
- member region,
- primary hotels,
- category (of the hotel class / €$ĄŁ price levels compared to currency rates / competition / city / region / country / continent )
- tenure (repeat custom / average spend at hotel)
Accompanying or adjoining reservations,
such as the additional rooms of your family etc are not included for Royal Ambassador consideration
but are included in determining Spire Elite status within IHG Rewards Club
.

* FT:IHG forum community group consensus / empirical evidence shows
- that members must have stayed at different unique hotels per city / country / region / continent
the amount of uniques needed for RA qualification is unknown but generally extended long stays at just 1 hotel do not qualify
- IHG-corporate showing keen interest in how much guests are spending €$ĄŁ at hotel's own operated F&B / Spa / transport / extra services / other venues
atacama40 has given us insights that extra spend at the hotel charged to the hotelfolio generates EQP but also flags the database as high valued spending guest
- one must have AMB to get considered for RA invitation by IHG as they seem to evaluate over a longer period the length of one's tenure / devotion / spend / undisclosed criteria at stayed IC-hotels

Update 2020 / 2021:
RA status was extended due to the global pandemic of covid19

================================================== =======

Update 2019: The RA status granted at the start of the calendar year 2017 and 2018 has been based on IC revenue. As from 2019 criteria again have become vague. RA is not achieved through IC spend only. Other, unknown elements are taken into account as well. (Fact: Some users with very high +25k IC spend were not renewed in 2019.)

Update December 2018: it looks like some accounts are proactively being renewed in December 2018, well ahead of the stated expiration of Jan 31, 2019. It is currently unknown what criteria were used, but previous years appeared to indicate around $10K++ in IC spend only.

As before, please Divide EQPs by 10 to get $$$ Spend

[Archived - no longer valid] New (Royal) Ambassador Criteria

A document was unintentionally available in the internet about changes to the (Royal) Ambassador Qualifying and Re-Qualifying criteria.
The document is available on

Older discussion
There was an ongoing discussion about the criteria for some time. This thread is now closed.

update from Executive Liaison Sept, 2023,
spend at other IHG luxury brands does count for RA, and Renewal.
Brands weren't stated, but reasonable to assume Six Senses, Regent, and Kimpton.

I have a bunch of different IC stays in the US and Europe.
Even if it does, I'm not as confident as to go abroad since I've not been vaccinated yet. I think it takes some more time to go abroad. I can't risk myself to expose to the Covid for extending RA.

Thanks for the update. I just checked on ihg.com and tried to make a booking for the IC KL next week and it's open and bookable for only 277MYR! I'm surprised that the border is closed between SG and Malaysia given that many SG workers live in Johor.

I would never criticize someone from stopping travel for health reasons. I can only speak for myself that travel is part of who I am and would never stop. And I seriously don't see any risk if you travel responsibly. But to each his own. I had the usual amount of hotel nights in 2020 even though I stopped travel for a couple of months at the beginning of the pandemic. So I fully expect to be renewed for 2022 one way or the other.

My understanding is there are two current schemes allowing a very limited number from both sides to cross the border. A few thousand commuters per day are covered by one, and few hundred official/business visitors each week by another. A third, much more ambitious, programme is on the way, involving vaccine certificates and the very large number of Johorians who normally cross the border to work in Singapore each day.

But the short answer is "no".

But remember that international travel restrictions are less about protecting the traveller, more about protecting residents from infections the traveller might unwittingly carry into the country.

The short answer is to never put yourself in an environment where you could receive or transfer the virus. What some of us have known all along, and what should be now generally known, is that it takes a heavy viral load to become infected, and that has to then take root in your body before you can infect others. I know that I am still a COVID virgin (serology tests, etc.) even after all my travels and spending significant time in large cities like New York and Paris. That is because I don't spend a lot of time close to other people while indoors. The only exception is onboard aircraft, but on the 787's and 777's I've been flying there is excellent air circulation and filtration. And of course when I check into the Intercontinental, I am very well protected.

International travel does not inherently spread COVID. Bad behavior by some international travelers can spread COVID.

Pardon that this may be off-topic. These are the latest developments around ASEAN / Asia. So far, there are no concrete developments and all leisure are not allowed into these countries except with valid reasons and quarantine for at least 14 days upon arrival and/or on return, which literally kills all leisure travel. As such, to maintain the kind of spending at IC hotels, min # of night stay and min of stay at different IC hotels is almost impossible for us in SG due to a small country here.

a) Indonesia wants an one-way travel bubble between Singapore and Batam/Bintan for SG residents only:

I know that I am still a COVID virgin (serology tests, etc.) even after all my travels and spending significant time in large cities like New York and Paris. That is because I don't spend a lot of time close to other people while indoors. The only exception is onboard aircraft, but on the 787's and 777's I've been flying there is excellent air circulation and filtration. And of course when I check into the Intercontinental, I am very well protected.

International travel does not inherently spread COVID. Bad behavior by some international travelers can spread COVID.
and conversely, i reside in the north east, with high infection and death rates, haven't travelled at all in the past year, and got Covid, and ended up being hospitalized twice.

travel to Australia has only been available under emergency circumstances, and then mandatory quarantine.

now the vaccine is widely available, i was hopeful travel would be more accessible by the northern summer, but in respect of Australia, i believe Qantas don't intend on resuming flights to the US until later in the year.

if you’re an Australian citizen or a permanent resident you cannot leave Australia due to Covid restrictions unless you have an exemption.

i think this year may continue to be a challenge for RA renewal for many.

So in the past to qualify for RA, one had to stay at 3 different IC.
Nowadays Kimpton also counts for RA-spend.

My "strategy/hope" for requalifying 2022 is because i'm based in Amsterdam to just divide my stays between the IC Ams and Kimpton de Witt with a stay in The Hague at Indigo or Staybridge suites thrown in. No foreign travel for me yet without the vaccine.

With travels limited (My flight from Hong Kong to Japan got cancelled 3 times! And my flight from Ho Kong to Las Vegas got cancelled twice) I don’t know how requalification will work.

Some RA I know has no IC or Kimpton in town. One IC in Hong Kong is closed for good and one IC left. One Crowne Plaza and Indego became quarantine hotel and not open for public. Impossible for multiple IC stays. IC stay and spend is difficult enough already.

I know a member with 17 IC stays and plenty IC spend in 2020 with no RA invitation. RA members are limited so as long as the old members get extended renewal there are no new RA invited I think.

17 IC stays for 2020 is quite a lot IMO considering travel restrictions and covid situation.

Similarly in SG, international travel is almost impossible. Here, there is only 1 IC operating with the rest of the chain (the other IC, regent, Crown Plaza and all HIs and HIEs being used as quarantine hotels). As such, I am wondering if IC will be adjusting their RA re-qualification criteria for this year given that from the outlook now, international borders are not likely to be fully opened up this year as well.

i haven't been keeping up this past year, travelling, or researching..

is that confirmed Kimpton spend counts towards RA Renewal?

is that for Six Senses, and Regent also?

@ Tim O'Brien :
The ever knowledgable Loyaltylobby made a mention that Kimpton spend is also considered for RA qualification. Aswell as spend with Regent and Six Senses.
Source: https://loyaltylobby.com/2020/10/27/...or-qualifying/

Bear in mind that a stay at Six Senses can be pricey and can reach at least something in the 4/5 digits.

My expectation is that as soon as vaccinated international travel restarts, the RA $ qualification threshold will increase in correlation due to the higher prices Six Senses commands. Holidaying at Six Senses resorts is in an upper price bracket than holidaying at an Intercontinental resort.

FWIW, I had 16 Kimpton stays in 2020, decently high $ rates. I received a first time bump to Inner Circle (and RA) from it in December 2020.
