Update 2023:
- it seems no new RA have been invited by IHG
- criteria for RA requalification are still unknown
- geographical location of member / country account registration seems of some impact due of covid19(restrictions/availability)
- RA is processed in weekly batches starting december 2022
- proof by nicolas75 shows RA qualification for 2024 seems to be strictly based on IC hotels only (not Regent, Kimpton, SixSenses anymore)

As per Tim O'Brien's post about IHG-corporate explaining RA criteria:

As you are aware,
Royal Ambassador is our invitation only tier with the number of members invited each year
limited to ensure our hotels are able to consistently deliver on the benefits promise,
elevating your stay experience at InterContinental Hotels & Resorts.

Although we do not currently have a published criteria for Royal Ambassador,
consideration is determined by variable activities within a members account such as
- qualified paid room nights & spend across our luxury brands (, 2023 EDIT: Post-Pandemic from 2024 InterContinental only : Pre-Pandemic also Kimpton & Regent ) ,
- member region,
- primary hotels,
- category (of the hotel class / €$¥£ price levels compared to currency rates / competition / city / region / country / continent )
- tenure (repeat custom / average spend at hotel)
Accompanying or adjoining reservations,
such as the additional rooms of your family etc are not included for Royal Ambassador consideration
but are included in determining Spire Elite status within IHG Rewards Club
.

* FT:IHG forum community group consensus / empirical evidence shows
- that members must have stayed at different unique hotels per city / country / region / continent
the amount of uniques needed for RA qualification is unknown but generally extended long stays at just 1 hotel do not qualify
- IHG-corporate showing keen interest in how much guests are spending €$¥£ at hotel's own operated F&B / Spa / transport / extra services / other venues
atacama40 has given us insights that extra spend at the hotel charged to the hotelfolio generates EQP but also flags the database as high valued spending guest
- one must have AMB to get considered for RA invitation by IHG as they seem to evaluate over a longer period the length of one's tenure / devotion / spend / undisclosed criteria at stayed IC-hotels

Update 2020 / 2021:
RA status was extended due to the global pandemic of covid19

================================================== =======

Update 2019: The RA status granted at the start of the calendar year 2017 and 2018 has been based on IC revenue. As from 2019 criteria again have become vague. RA is not achieved through IC spend only. Other, unknown elements are taken into account as well. (Fact: Some users with very high +25k IC spend were not renewed in 2019.)

Update December 2018: it looks like some accounts are proactively being renewed in December 2018, well ahead of the stated expiration of Jan 31, 2019. It is currently unknown what criteria were used, but previous years appeared to indicate around $10K++ in IC spend only.

As before, please Divide EQPs by 10 to get $$$ Spend

[Archived - no longer valid] New (Royal) Ambassador Criteria

A document was unintentionally available in the internet about changes to the (Royal) Ambassador Qualifying and Re-Qualifying criteria.
The document is available on

http://viewfromthewing.img.boardinga...Ambassador.pdf

Older discussion
There was an ongoing discussion about the criteria for some time. This thread is now closed.

update from Executive Liaison Sept, 2023,
spend at other IHG luxury brands does count for RA, and Renewal.
Brands weren't stated, but reasonable to assume Six Senses, Regent, and Kimpton.

I think it's time to move on for me.. I have achieved Marriott LT Plat so I will pursue for Hyatt LT Globalist.
I've been RA for 10 years and I was happy with so many wonderful ICs and staffs.
But spending 10~20k every year for suite excluded upgrade, no lifetime status and $50 minibar credit, just unacceptable..

Well put.

I'm writing this from IC PRG, where I got a pretty nice suite with a good view (certainly beyond the 2 level upgrade), but I'm paying for this stay - I haven't a clue what would've happened if I had used my points, of which I have oodles.

I've started moving my stays to Hyatt - PH has been incredible every time bar none.

IHG moved me on - I'm not going to re-hash my tale of woe: suffice it to say well over ten years RA and just over 100 paid nights at ICs last year counted for nothing. I joined when it was known as Six Continents, run by a small team in (I think) Bristol.

In January of this year, that level of commitment was rewarded with one year's subscription to a status any Tom, Dick or Harriet gets for a couple of hundred dollars, no stay history required.

So, anyway, Bonvoy and HH stepped in with flashy status cards, so for the first half of this year I've hopped between the two, supplementing those stays with some at the couple of ICs which continue to treat me well. I'm letting Bonvoy go: it was getting too complicated running with two programmes and Hilton is he simplest, the easiest, to maintain.

Make no mistake, ICs (generally) offer better facilities, nicer rooms and much classier lounges than Hiltons. But the HH programme comes into its own with breakfasts at its main and sub-brand hotels, and access to lounges, on all stays, cash or points. Suites are hit and miss, but some are delightful; lounges can be horribly crowded and the early check-in policy (or lack of it) is an irritant. I've had to get used to popping into the lounge for a Coke rather than use the mini-bar, but I also avoid the silliness of cash credits and penalties introduced by the crazies at IHG.

The geographical footprint of perfectly nice hotels offering consistent benefits is impressive: and given that I travel widely and pay ultimately out of my own pocket, that's important.

I'll drop out of the Ambassador and Spire programmes at the end of the year.

I know the loss of my spend is but a drop in IHG's ocean. But it might be more significant at hotel level. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only demoted or disillusioned RA who has left the programme, so maybe the cumulative impact will wake up the corporate smarties at IHG Towers.

Maybe they WILL reclaim the services, or the spirit, of Ms Negus

I don't think IHG care about RA. They've been gradually trying to dispose of the program for a while now. I suspect the perpetrators of the recent mini-bar ruse are mightily pleased with themselves. That's how short-sighted they are.

They care about development in new markets, and specifically China.

They even literally offer better benefits in that market.

All though minor in terms of overall monetary impact, the enhanced minibar is a colossal marketing failure as it sends their “most valued guests” off with a negative impression (checking out - having to cough up 15$ due to restocking fee and other creative charges).

Archetypical spreadsheet economics failing to see the big picture. And yes, I agree with the previous speaker; they’re probably saluting themselves for “job well done”, because the spreadsheet numbers are now back in black.

On the flip side (of spreadsheet economics) you have IKEA, offering free ice-cream to kids when parents use IKEA’s free babysitting service - no purchase necessary.

The assigned room (Royal Amb Suite @IC Boston) for me was the one located just the opposite to the club lounge. As you know, only a-few-second walk

I liked the room very much, especially the large living room with a nice view, although if the property were placed higher from the ground the landscape looking down the river would be much greater.
Also aside from the room I thought the F&B presentation of the club lounge was a bit weaker (no afternoon tea service, omelet station only open on weekends, etc.).
The club lounge manager was saying he was new to the property & also new to IHG, so just hoping that he would make some improvements, ones that are competitive to qualities of other luxury brands.

Back in May when I stayed at IC NY Barclay, I just glanced at a piece of paper for the staff describing my stay.
It was by accident, when there was a change in staff who unintentionally left the paper in front of me.

In the paper there was a column saying "VIP" and in my case "6" was filled in the column.

I just thought if someone here has had any chance to see that kind of info or someone has any idea about what the column means?

It’s vary on hotels, However, in many of case, “6” means Royal Ambassador. It’s a legacy of Six Continents Club.

one question: what has all this conversation to do with the RA qualifiying criteria? Shouldn't it be posted in the respective hotel thread?

Yeah I suggested that 5 days ago in post 3507, but I guess it didn't take. We like discussing travel too much it seems.

OK, back on topic.....

my guess is this year's threshold for renewal will be USD12K, and minimum three Intercon properties.

the only question in my mind is whether they will amalgamate spend from Kimpton stays?

Nothing, and this is the reason why I moved the post regarding San Francisco, Los Angeles und San Diego to its own thread, which could be found here:

Please follow the discussion there.
