Update December 2018: it looks like some accounts are proactively being renewed in December 2018, well ahead of the stated expiration of Jan 31, 2019. It is currently unknown what criteria were used, but previous years appeared to indicate around $10K++ in IC spend only.

As before, please Divide EQPs by 10 to get $$$ Spend

don't worry yourself, you have it, they notified you in your account on Dec 27th, many others haven't received emails.

it seemed odd to me, but several have reported that.

see numbers in the spreadsheet.

One just needs to read the posts on this message board: Lots of RAs remain high volume clients at IC only because of the very fact that they are RA. Without the status, the value proposition, or roller coaster of experiences, is simply not worth it. (Note that this is not fully in line with my personal experience. Just an ever recurring opinion heard among many RAs.)

There are two situations:
  1. Renewal of RA: How often do you read here and elsewhere online "If I would loose RA, I would shift my business"? I lost count.

The IC footprint is limited. (Regent and Kimpton are a welcome addition.) Many first and second tier cities, have better hotels, at a more attractive price point, which offer not only a rewarding, but often also a transparent loyalty program such as Hilton and Marriott/Starwood.

Now add in the uncertainty, and the vague and ever changing renewal criteria of RA. How valued does a member feel, when arbitrary some will renew with certain stats, and others do not under the same criteria? This uncertainty does not create additional revenue. People are deterred in making reservations for the upcoming year, or play it safe, and transfer everything elsewhere. Bear in mind that in the travel and hospitality industry, the opinions on message boards like this, are often an early indicator as to the view of the general public in the coming years.

If you take the RA membership away of someone who has spend north of 10k in the past year, without any warning, he won't try to do better next year. You have lost him for ever. Plus, this also sends a negative message to all other RAs, who will also be looking for a plan B, and perhaps do get to experience that the grass maybe indeed is greener on the other side. Even worse, such a policy might even backfire double for InterContinental, as those who voice their concern, and care to reach out to IHG, are often the very same people that are naturally actively sharing their (mostly) positive experiences both online and among peers & colleagues. Their voice carries far. This adds to even more negative coverage.
  2. First time achieving RA

Who in his right mind has set the goal in the past years to start and try to achieve RA from scratch? Every time when someone contemplates his options upfront, conclusion is: it is not worth it. You don't know what to aim for. Or before you are almost there, they might have set the bar at yet another level. Play it safe, go elsewhere.

With the recent changes RAs already had to swallow enough changes. Keep it simple. I do not understand why they would not be lenient on renewal for this particular year. Or it is their intention to empty the minibar completely?

Conclusion is, many RA have come to appreciate the pros and cons of the program. But if there is one thing they have learned over the years, it is that they are determined to never look back if they would ever fail to achieve the status. The program is at a tipping point, lots of high volume clients are uncomfortable in this situation, and ready to move on. As a side effect, the decreased affection of these most "loyal" clients will trickle down and have an impact on the attractiveness of the Intercontinental brand for all customers.

This is damaging to the Ambassador program. This is damaging to InterContinental.
they need to re introduce qualifying mid year. they discontinued that in the 2017 calendar year.

makes absolutely no sense for anyone to stay an entire year without status.

The reason that many of us have persevered with this shambles for so long was that the benefits outweighed the uncertainty and shear incomptence at IHG. Now however I am less sure, the early check in is reduced (to a level that is probably achievable as an elite in most other chains), the minibar benefit is reduced potentially quite significantly, most of all the guaranteed room upgrade benefit can now be gamed to give a small cash value rather than a potentially very expensive upgrade. I may speak for myself alone here but I can't think of any IC property that is so good I would stay there without RA.

The mystique and flap around RA are caused more by the fact that everything else IHG offered historically was crap in comparison so losing RA is an inflexion point in the relationship.

The likely new reality for RA is far less enticing than it ever was before and there are plenty of other chains which will give more consistent recognition across their portfolio.
i know for a fact i wouldn't stay without RA.

as noted, RA is the draw, the entire appeal.

i can stay at RC and get club, sweet suite upgrades, and stay in better quality/higher end properties, why wld one punish themselves staying at IC, with no status, or i should stay no useful status.

is the USD10K net spend in the spreadsheet augmented by the stay after Dec 27th, and if so what was your total net IC spend?

This morning, I have received official mail about my RA status has been renewed. However, neither further activities indications update nor actual RA Kit delivered yet. BTW, this mail mentions my last year IC nights were 70. No, my last year IC nights are over hundred!

10k is my total net IC spend. Maybe they have not decided yet the exact criteria 10k, 11k or 12k because I did not get any downgrade email too.

My invite was way off also, it said 36 nights!! When I had 50 paid in full and another 20 on points.

It's no wonder there is so much confusion over who has and has not qualified....
