Update 2023:
- it seems no new RA have been invited by IHG
- criteria for RA requalification are still unknown
- geographical location of member / country account registration seems of some impact due of covid19(restrictions/availability)
- RA is processed in weekly batches starting december 2022
- proof by nicolas75 shows RA qualification for 2024 seems to be strictly based on IC hotels only (not Regent, Kimpton, SixSenses anymore)

As per Tim O'Brien's post about IHG-corporate explaining RA criteria:

As you are aware,
Royal Ambassador is our invitation only tier with the number of members invited each year
limited to ensure our hotels are able to consistently deliver on the benefits promise,
elevating your stay experience at InterContinental Hotels & Resorts.

Although we do not currently have a published criteria for Royal Ambassador,
consideration is determined by variable activities within a members account such as
- qualified paid room nights & spend across our luxury brands (, 2023 EDIT: Post-Pandemic from 2024 InterContinental only : Pre-Pandemic also Kimpton & Regent ) ,
- member region,
- primary hotels,
- category (of the hotel class / €$ĄŁ price levels compared to currency rates / competition / city / region / country / continent )
- tenure (repeat custom / average spend at hotel)
Accompanying or adjoining reservations,
such as the additional rooms of your family etc are not included for Royal Ambassador consideration
but are included in determining Spire Elite status within IHG Rewards Club
.

* FT:IHG forum community group consensus / empirical evidence shows
- that members must have stayed at different unique hotels per city / country / region / continent
the amount of uniques needed for RA qualification is unknown but generally extended long stays at just 1 hotel do not qualify
- IHG-corporate showing keen interest in how much guests are spending €$ĄŁ at hotel's own operated F&B / Spa / transport / extra services / other venues
atacama40 has given us insights that extra spend at the hotel charged to the hotelfolio generates EQP but also flags the database as high valued spending guest
- one must have AMB to get considered for RA invitation by IHG as they seem to evaluate over a longer period the length of one's tenure / devotion / spend / undisclosed criteria at stayed IC-hotels

Update 2020 / 2021:
RA status was extended due to the global pandemic of covid19

================================================== =======

Update 2019: The RA status granted at the start of the calendar year 2017 and 2018 has been based on IC revenue. As from 2019 criteria again have become vague. RA is not achieved through IC spend only. Other, unknown elements are taken into account as well. (Fact: Some users with very high +25k IC spend were not renewed in 2019.)

Update December 2018: it looks like some accounts are proactively being renewed in December 2018, well ahead of the stated expiration of Jan 31, 2019. It is currently unknown what criteria were used, but previous years appeared to indicate around $10K++ in IC spend only.

As before, please Divide EQPs by 10 to get $$$ Spend

[Archived - no longer valid] New (Royal) Ambassador Criteria

A document was unintentionally available in the internet about changes to the (Royal) Ambassador Qualifying and Re-Qualifying criteria.
The document is available on

http://viewfromthewing.img.boardinga...Ambassador.pdf

Older discussion
There was an ongoing discussion about the criteria for some time. This thread is now closed.

update from Executive Liaison Sept, 2023,
spend at other IHG luxury brands does count for RA, and Renewal.
Brands weren't stated, but reasonable to assume Six Senses, Regent, and Kimpton.

Emailing the Ambassador service centre resulted in the usual "top 1% of Ambassadors" blah blah and did not give me any indication as to whether I have/am on track to having it renewed or not.

I really think they should simply set the clear criteria and be done with it.

I am under impression Ambs will only be made upto RA status once a year at the same time ie Jan renewal when RAs get renewed.

Kind of sucks for new Ambs who in past would beome RA on reaching a qual target, but is what happened Aug-Dec2016 with no Ambs being prmoted to RA until Jan 4th 2017.
Previously I was only spending about $10k a year off of 20 nights. This is the first year I have made a concerted effort to qualify for RA although I’m starting to realise this is going to be a bit pointless for me as there are minimal benefits on rewards nights - which is exactly when I need them. My paid nights tend to be suites anyway.

Incidentally, I did ask the Amb rep at a hotel I was staying at about a year ago what the RA qualification criteria was going to be. They said they thought it was going to be 300k EQP p.a. - seems a bit ridiculous.

I am on 90 IC nights - with one more next week and about 275,000 IC EQP so lets see what happens ... I do wonder if there is going to be a dramatic increase in the qualification. The last club lounge I was in the manager asked me if I thought I would qualify, I sensed then then that she thought the hurdle would be high. To be frank $10 to 15k is a bit easy for IC and not an awful lot of stays in Europe or Asia. A lower population might make the benefits a bit more exclusive too, whether or not I qualify, it is a good thing for a top end programme.

The new site sucks. Less information, poorly organized, glitchy. Their design agency was more focused on making it "look" good than to make it useful.
I'm not even sure it _looks_ good. The definition of "looks good" differs depending on the purpose of the site - if my Amex transaction details page looks completely awesome but doesn't actually show me the name of the store that charged me, I'm going to be pretty irate. That's kind of what they did here.

No chance for renewal here due to a dramatic drop and change in travel patterns. My account also says Amb is about to expire. ISTR it is a global thing. Everyone sees it regardless of renewal or not.

Holding off to see if there is a soft landing. Will miss RA especially on vacations as club benefit is hugely beneficial with kids.
But Spire Amb will do for the next two years, book a suite and connecting room on points.
IThink likes this.

WOW 300k I hope that rep was way off, when I read what others had spent to earn RA for 2017 I thought my 154,000 EQP for this year would put me in with a chance of getting it, fingers crossed I still am.

planning for life after RA

I am beginning to seriously question if I will be renewed or not

what do people here recommend for another hotel loyalty program option and who is matching elite status?

I'd not think so because you get Ambassador for free in case of a downgrade

Your Ambassador membership has expired, but it's not too late to renew. today
i wouldn't worry about any of those system generated communications, often erroneous, remember it's IHG IT!

i just received this.....no mention of RA, just Ambassador.......

Dear Timothy,As this year comes to a close, we'd like to express our sincere thanks to you for being an InterContinental® Ambassador.

Whether you found yourself immersed in vibrant cities like Kuala Lumpur or Paris, or on the idyllic beaches of Fiji or Koh Samui, we hope your expectations were exceeded. Wherever your 2018 takes you, we look forward to welcoming you again.

From all of us at InterContinental® Ambassador, thank you.

I got that one year when my RA was renewed, and the system didn't even let me renew it as it went into a loop anyway.

It probably means nothing. I suspect we might be giving the IHG IT too much credit

2 different CP of which still 1 to go to JKT
1 HIX night -- non qualifying booked via booking.com
total nights 41 at IC / 3 at CP / 1 at HIX ( non qualifying)

IC hotels visited: 2x Parklane, 3x Amstel, O2, Dusseldorf, Madrid, Warsaw, Bangkok, 2x Athens, Washington Willard, Bali (+ Singapore to go)

qualified spending total at the moment is 14504.69 USD at IC (could be a bit more) / $ 1520,94 at CP
- in some cases i think the app and online statement mixes the values i.e. IC BKK spa expenditure was listed non qualifying spend yet was taken into calculation for base points accumulation
- but still fighting with IC Willard Washington over missing points: they awarded me 25000 points for a truely abysmally awefull stay which are non qualifying points therefore voiding my entire stay (booked via IHG app) as non qualifying. I would have gotten approx $3000 worth of points + 4 qualifying nights. The director of rooms is a great guy and did a great job at insitu service recovery but the rest of the hotel must be run by monkeys from snobville)
- still getting points of last night stay at IC Bali
- in case IC has a signature restaurant we tend to have a meal there (i.e. Parklane - restaurant Theo Randall) so might by a soft weighted factor of anticipated f&b spend

only need to focus on IC spend, and minimum three properties.

yeah, i call rep bulls1t.....

I kinda hope it's 300K actually. It's such a ridiculous number that so far in this thread only one person would make it. Off they go, they can have an RA program with about three people in it. I'll actually feel better

Funny, as I didn't even get that. Sigh.

[edit] never mind, just got it. It's funny that it has the same wording, and I've not been to Koh Samui or the idyllic beaches of Fiji this year... or ever, for the latter. Sigh.
