Per the PC T&C

Points for Elite Status – For purposes of determining Elite status, IHG® Rewards Club points are classified as either Qualifying Points or Non-Qualifying Points. Points earned from Qualifying Rates paid for hotel stays, spend on IHG® Rewards Club credit cards, select partner activity, IHG® Rewards Club Bonus Points Packages, and Qualified Spend through IHG® Business Rewards are considered Qualifying Points and are counted towards Elite status. A Qualifying Rate includes the following: non-discounted rate, standard corporate rate, worldwide sales negotiated rate, national/regional/local government rate and specified leisure rates as confirmed by the IHG reservation system. All other point earning transactions, including points earned from IHG® promotions, Elite status bonuses, activation bonuses or select promotions offered through IHG® Rewards Club credit cards, select partner promotions, point vouchers, point purchases, point transfers, and point deposits, will be considered Non-Qualifying Points and will not be counted towards Elite status.
For any IHG property, including the ones listed below, it's a good idea to check the IHG app for additional bonus point packages. For whatever reason, the IHG website does not always include all points packages that can be found in the app.

Hi -

Also, check the rate rules. For example, at the Crowne Plaza Lake Oswego, OR, they have 5000 points package and a 10000 points package. The 10,000 package rate rules state "Are you a point junkie. . . How does 10000 bonus points per night sound to you? Book the 10k bonus point package and receive ten thousand IHG rewards bonus points for each night of your stay. These points are non qualified points and will not apply to elite status requirements."

Compare that to the 5000 point package rate rules: "Exclusive to IHG® Rewards Club members - Earn 5,000 bonus Rewards Club points for your stay when you book the 5,000 Bonus Point Package. A stay is defined as one night or consecutive nights at the same hotel, regardless of frequency of check-in/out. Membership of IHG Rewards Club is Free! Points can be redeemed at any time for a variety of rewards, including free hotel stays, airline miles, name-brand merchandise and more. Book now to take advantage of this special offer! ".

Nowhere does it state that the 5K points are non-qualified.

Is it just me, or are these bonus point packages really expensive when compared to the lowest (prepaid) rates ? Even the 1,000 extra points per night rates seem pricey.

It depends. Point packages are usually on top of a flexible rate. So, if for a particular stay, you're fine going with a non-cancellable/prepaid option, the extra charge for a bonus-point package may be a bit steep.

Another thing: Prices vary by property. Some charge as little as EUR/USD/GBP 25 extra for a 5k package. While award points can be had cheaper on occasion, that's not such a bad price at all. (Particurly when factoring in that these points are elite-qualifying.)

This is what mine say. "Includes room and 10000 Rewards Club bonus points per night if you collectmiles with participating airlines points convert into miles. Any number of consecutive nights at the same hotel will be considered one stay. Vouchers will be received upon check out"

Are there more data points on the 10K points if they’ll count as qualifying? I can choose a 5K package that I know is qualifying towards elite, but I’m skeptical on the 10K. I found a 10K rate under my company cap, so I could book it although it’s less desireable location. Phone and social media confirms it counts but I’m hesitant. Any input is appreciated.

I have never had a issue getting them posted to my account as qualifying! If you are worried about it call the hotel or call IHG to ask.

I have a few 5,000 point bonus package stays booked in 2019. I just did a search for a couple of places in suburban DC as well as Crowne Plaza Times Square in NYC for the same package. All they are showing is a 1,000, 2,000 or 3,000 point option, priced at roughly $5, $10, & $15 respectively over the best flexible rate. The 5,000 point option is nowhere to be seen at the hotels I checked, or hotels in other cities that I randomly checked as well. My older bookings are still in my account with the 5,000 point package attached.

Just have to really take the time and search I know 2 years ago one of the Manhattan Holiday Inn's was doing 20k bonus point package!

Just yesterday, I too noted that about 10 hotels that I looked at had gone to the goofy and expensive 1k, 2k, and 3k options only.

I worry that the corporate 5k might be going away. The 10k was always a local hotel promotion, that is why it doesn't (automatically) count toward elite status. Hard to know if those, too, will go away.

Sorry, but I did take the time to search hotels in the locations where I needed a reservation. As I stated, ALL of them (as well as some that I randomly searched in other parts of the country) are offering no more than 3K in elite bonus points packages, down from the previous 5K.

What happened two years ago with a 20K point bonus package is not relevant. What matters today is that for those of us looking to grab 5K elite bonus points at something resembling a reasonable price, that opportunity appears to have gone away. And if so, then I wouldn't be surprised if this has a negative impact on those folks looking for those upper-level award packages of 10K or more. If IHG is down to 3K as the highest point package, will the individual hotels offering 10K reduce their packages as well? 10K was simply two times what you could get from IHG. Now 2X would only be 6,000 points. Is that worth the upcharge, whatever it might be?

I spent more time searching 7-8 hotels for a 5K bonus at the right price (upcoming trip to Chicago) than any sane person would spend. You get different results from various ways to book— IHG app on Android, iPad, web site, hotels’ websites. Eventually just went with the hotel of my choice, Kimpton, because I found a great AAA promo rate for the 4 nights. It showed only a 1K bonus, not interested.

Tinkering around today because I need about 3K more to hit Spire. Went on the app, Android. Pulled up Offers, clicked on bonus point offers, drop down has all kinds of possible choices (some with breakfast), chose 5K, put in my city and 1 night. Up came my Kimpton and 5K at a rate that was about $20 more than AAA. I felt like I’d found gold! Reservation confirmed showing exactly that.

Not suggesting anyone else should go OCD to attain Spire. But now I’ll get the 25K Spire bonus, and I’ve received great upgrades at Kimtons because of Spire. I’m a happy camper. For now.

Wow, that actually works. I went to “offers” and chose “5k” then searched. About half the hotels that I had looked at yesterday suddenly had 5k offers. Good find.

How odd and painful. While I was able to search for 5k offers on my ipad using the app, this morning I find that I cannot do the same thing on my desktop.

Certainly, the Indigo over in Brooklyn offered me one of those about 3 years ago. I think, if my memory is right, it cost an extra $80 which I thought was a great deal at the time. Points were non qualifying though.

Here's an interesting discovery. I just went back to a couple of the hotels referenced in my prior post, where the 5,000 point bonus was no longer being displayed. Here's what I found. If I choose the Best Flex rate on a given night with the Member Discount, the 3,000 point package is the highest point-total option. But if I choose the higher standard rate, the 5,000 point option is there, at a greater overall cost than the member discount rate with 3K points.

Example: CP Times Square. Best Flex Member rate is $284 ("Save $15".) Add on 3K points package @$14 for a total of $298. If you want the 5K points package you have to go with the Standard Flex rate of $299, plus $20 for the 5K for a total of $319. Thanks, IHG!!
