So am I.
I think I did as I booked a Bella Suite and got upgraded to a Bella View which according to the IC website is 2 levels higher then the Bella non view with the Luxury comfort coming in between them.
Anyway my friend was staying in a Rialto which is the next level higher then the Bella's and to be honest with you it was 99% the same aside from a bigger entrance area.

always good to verify on property as to what you booked and what you are receiving to be fair to yourself
So far upgrades don't sound very promising here other than the mini bar benefit
Sounds like RA bonus points don't apply either here perhaps making this a better redemption hotel

Maybe book a cancelable rate and keep watching to see if it drops for an advanced purchase rate. That way if the price spikes you only have to pay the rate you have booked already but if the price goes down you can take advantage of it.

Anyone had any luck combining there AMEX Platinum card hotel program amenities with their Royal Ambassador status for a much better suite? Will be trying in early June.

that would be penthouses.
There are also suites above the penthouse.
Regular 'revenue' guest penthouse upgrades (in Vegas) are not a hugh deal, IMO. (though, still really nice).
Of course, you are competing with players; that are much more valuable to V/P than any (non-player) RA.

You are missing a very big point here, unlike other IC hotels
THIS IS A CASINO PROPERTY! (sorry to shout)
The upper level suites ARE NOT (in 98% of the instances) controlled by the front desk!!! They are controlled by the CASINO!
The front desk has incentive to revenue upgrade (if they are light on players); for $400 to $1000/night for the Penthouse, and if they get a fish on the line for the revenue upgrade; the casino will release it... but, there are MUCH MORE powerful peeps controlling the rooms than the hotel GM. The hotel GM is just a paper-pusher. He/she has little 'real' control in a casino hotel; but he/she does have to have a nice smile.
Often, they use those upper level rooms to throw a bone to a smaller player if capacity is light. Smaller player = $25K to $50K credit line.
RAs have to embrace the (pretty decent) benefits (some limited upgrades, lounge, mini-bar, check-in efficiencies, gym/spa upgraded upgraded access etc...); but RAs also have to be realistic that they are very far from the 'top dog' status they get at non-casino ICs.
Of course, everything is YMMV, and it never hurts to ask (beg!)

Couldn't agree more. I was very satisfied with the VIP treatment during my stay there. I would go as far as saying that it was much better then my stays at most IC's across the world the past year and off course the mini bar has been the best so far. Much better then most of the IC's that have just a few beers.
I just always try to remind people that at a casino property, the front desk (or hotel general manager) doesn't have the kind of control they would at a non-casino property.
V/P is a great addition to the IC line-up; but it's also one of the highest-player level casinos in Vegas. This does put RAs at a distinct disadvantage with regard to top room upgrades. Now, if it was like Paris Las Vegas ; that would be a totally different story. A $100K credit-line at a place like V/P is just another 'nice' casino VIP. It's not a really big deal. This is ONLY the case at a few Vegas properties, and V/P is one of them.
Now, if you want a 'nice' property where the casino can't attract (the quantity they need) premium players, Cosmopolitan might be a good place to look. Much better chance that a Marriott Platinum (at Cosmo) will have more clout there than an RA at V/P.
