Tips on how to navigate to the hotel from Shinagawa Station (JR Shinkansen, Yamanote Line, Keikyu Airport Line to/from HND, other various lines that stop in Shinagawa).
The easiest way is via the second (main) level, one up from street level. Exiting the station, there are elevated sidewalks/skyways that leads into the elevator lobby of the hotel.
From the second floor, follow signs to the Konan (East) Exit of the Shinagawa Station and exit there. Best to walk on the right side of the corridor. When exiting, the Dean + DeLuca cafe will be on your right, follow the flow of traffic to the right past the store and then take a left down the long walkway and you will see the sign for the hotel as you get closer on the right side. There's a small 7-11 on the left when you get to the hotel entrance. Walk down the corridor and turn left which will lead you to the elevator banks that service the 26th floor check in lobby.

- Keikyu Line platform seems to mainly exit to street level so make your way up to the second level at the earliest opportunity.
- All other non-Shinkansen lines exit from the platform up stairs/escalators/elevators to the second floor; follow signs to the Central Exit outside of fare control
- Shinkansen lines have their own exits from the second floor

Technically speaking, IC Strings is the only one close to a train (JR line) station. Others are close to subway/monorail stations.

Technically speaking, none of the hotels is close to a monorail station.

You are right. I thought Yurikamome line with its Takeshiba station was a mononorail.
From Wikipedia:
Yurikamome is sometimes incorrectly called a monorail, but the trains run with rubber-tired wheels on elevated concrete track guided by the side walls.

Train Station to me would suggest a station offering mainline service (which Shinigawa does) and perhaps suburban commuter trains. Otherwise to me it's a Subway or Metro or El [Elevated] Station.

Planning to book a night in this hotel on points.
There will be three of us (no kids)
Will I be charged for the 3rd person?
Plat Amb here so the 2nd person should be waived right?

Were you happy with the hotel/stay?
Yes
What level are you?
Royal Ambassador
Which room did you book and which upgrade did you get?
Booked two weekend nights on AMB BoGo Rate in Superior Room, received upgrade to King Deluxe Club Room on 31 Fl. Seems to be the standard upgrade for RA since I catched this one in 4 of 4 recent stays.
How are the rooms?
Nice, dark, elegant ambience with breathtaking view to Tokyo Bay, Rainbow Bridge and up to Roppongi Hills on the other side. Bit of noise coming up from Shinagawa station, but nothing to complain about.
How is the exec. lounge?
None, but club benefits contain choice of free buffet breakfast in The Dining Room hotel, or free in room American or Continental breakfast. In addition all day non alcoholic beverages down at the bar, and free cockail hour 5pm to 7pm.
Received letter at check in that beginning with 1st of August 2012 the Club Intercontinental benefits will no longer be granted along with upgrade one receives as RA. Letter says: "In our effort to provide a consistent delivery of these benefits we now must align ourselves with the parameters of the programs design. (...) While we appreciate this is a monumental change to our historical practice, we do seek your understanding... Hiroyuki Kaneko, General Manager".
Sounds familar, he?
What was good and what was bad?
GOOD
- Staff very pleasant and helpful
- Hotel has a very exclusive touch due to its unique situation on top of an office building and limited number of rooms never seems crowded. Basically the hotel is using the Fls 26 to 32 of Shinagawa East Building, with lobby being in Fl26 and Club Level being Fl31/32
- Location at Shinagawa station (JR Shinkansen and local Tokyo trains) is very convenient
- Breakfast buffet at The Dining Room
- Fruit plate, bottle of French red wine, well stocked Minibar free for RA
- Nice bathroom
So so
- Club Deluxe Room is a bit on the small side
Very bad
- Letter with announcement of RA benefit reduction with effect of 1 August 2012
Value for $ or Priority Club Points? Would you return?
Ok value for weekend stay with BoGo and full RA benefit. As soon as that is gone I will move my business to The Conrad.

By willing getting too much, properties may loose all with their most frequent guests

My POV: Often Virtuoso-Amenities are more attractive.... And points without proper upgrade and bad exchange rates to Miles - useless

It clearly mentioned no more club benefits at all starting August 1st. What remains is the upgrade to a higher room.
You can try negotiating on check in, however speaking for myself I am done with IC Strings since it is definitely not worth going there as a RA if no Club benefits are guaranteed any more.
