Amenity fees/award stays: hotels that do & donít waive (San Francisco Bay Area)

IHG has no global policy on whether properties with amenity/destination fees can or cannot apply those fees to reward stays (on points or with a free-night certificate). Practices vary widely, but are not made clear on the hotelsí websites or IHGís booking interface.

This thread attempts to document the policies of the IHG hotels in three parts of the Bay Area:

- seven properties in San Francisco proper

- seven hotels near San Francisco Airport (from San Bruno to Redwood City)

- one hotel in Marin County

None of the many IHG properties elsewhere in the Bay Area (East Bay, Silicon Valley) impose an amenity fee on any stays, so they are not listed here.

A few caveats:

- Some properties have similar names: for example, HIX San Francisco-Airport North and HIX San Francisco-Airport South. Be sure not to mistake one for another.

- Iíve done my best to cite high-quality sources, but it is impossible to be definitive. The summaries below represent a compilation of info from posts by FTers with meaningful track records; statements from hotel representatives; and occasionally other online reports. I give substantial weight to hotelsí clear written replies, especially ones signed with a name & title; treat repeated failures to answer email as a sign of uncertainty (and/or gross indifference); and assign little weight to uncorroborated statements over the phone.

- Circumstances may change. Hotels may switch without notice from waiving the fee to charging it, or vice versa. Fee amounts will change over time. If you want to be certain of the current policy at a given property, confirm it with them directly, preferably in writing.

- In some cases, FTers have reported getting a fee waiver by complaining to the front desk (and/or as compensation for some other problem encountered during the stay). I ignore such one-off reports because itís dicey to expect that everybody will get the same treatment, and in any event haggling with hotel staff can be unpleasant and time-consuming.

- Fees shown are per room per day.

If you see a relevant report elsewhere on FT or have recent firsthand experience, please post about it here and Iíll update the list as time permits. The same goes for local hotel openings/closings and fee amount changes. Thanks.

Thanks for this post.

However, it looks like IC San Francisco has now also added a resort fee. Any info on whether it's waived on reward stays or not?

This is a very helpful thread for those who visit the San Francisco Bay Area. (I grew up in San Rafael.)
