This is a good thing because it makes that beach club area, nicer, quieter and more exclusive. My only criticism is that they allow children at all.

i thought the lounge was pretty decent and possibly my favourite European IC lounge for quality and variety of food and drink offerings.

Interesting glitch currently for this property. Every room category available on award nights. Whether or not they would honour is another question.

Great elite recognition, good location and friendly service (34 Photos)

InterContinental Malta

For my last night in Malta, I selected this property as I had a free award night Chase voucher to use - which turned out to be quite a good value as my night was retailing close to 200€ for the lowest room category.  I had quite low expectation for this property even as a IHG Elite member as at most IHG properties as a Plat member, however I was totally surprised by this property.  My stay here turned out to be a great closure to my 10 days vacation on this beautiful island/country.

Location

This property is located at the heart of St.Julians main area beach, bars, restaurants and nightclub area.  Next to this property was the opposite budegt of the IHG chain, the Holiday Inn Express.  Around the area, there's of other shops and quite a large casino.

Transportation wise, it was also convenient as within walking distance you can get to a bus stop or taxi stand.

Check In

I arrived after 3pm (officialy check-in time) to a beautiful open lobby and although the front desk was busy, there were lots of associates around so I was assisted immediately with the check-in registration by a friendly associate.  I was informed that I was upgraded to a nice Suite for this 1 night stay, which was very much appreciated and after that a run down of the facilities at the property.

After the process was completed, I was also surprised that I was accompanied towards the lift by this same associate - not often you such treatment which was nice especially if you enter such a large hotel complex and not familiar yet with the direction.

IMG_20210703_164102967.jpgIMG_20210703_164109504.jpg

Room

The room was located on the 13th floor and this corner suite was huge and I believe recently renovated to a very modern interior.  Although the room colour palette was on the dark side, due to the large floor to ceiling balcony doors, this gave it that elegant finishing touch to it (I guess it's a personal taste).

The room opened up to a working desk on the right as you enter the room and a nice seating area and the TV area.  In this same room, there was also a round dining table for 3 guests.  At the corner in this room was the bar/coffee/tea making area.  Coffee making offered was an Nespresso like equipment (and Italian brand) which did still make some good coffee.  The minibar was also located here - and although emptied, just becareful that if you place items in there the sensor will still be activated and charges sent to your room (removed when checking out).  There was also 2 small bottles of water provided.  In this first room, you have 2 option of balcony that you can use - a smaller one and one much larger with deck chairs and a small table - which was perfect for a nice relaxing area in the evening.

The bed was located in the 2nd room - which was also quite a large room with a large wardrobe and another balcony.  The bed quality was very good.  In this room was also a TV desk which came with the usual local and international options.  It was also my first time noticing a much more advanced type of interactive TV at hotels - just too bad they did not include an option for streaming your shows to it.

IMG_20210703_153853430.jpg

The bathroom was another positive aspect of this suite - with a walk in shower and a bathtub with jaccuzzi function - which was very much appreciated and another another touch of luxury to a suite (which again not very common in previous suites I've received).  The shower temperature and pressure was very good.  Toiletries provided were Agraria which had a nice citrusy fragrance.  The size of them were one of the largest I've seen for a hotel - adding that luxurious touch.

IMG_20210703_153016224.jpg

In both rooms, the temperature control was good and fan speed at the lowest speed was not too loud.  Only small complain here was the position of the air direction in the bedroom which was full force towards the bed so it does seem like it was just blowing directly to your face - I basically just switched it off and increased the one in the other room when I went to bed which worked quite well.

Sleep quality was good with hardly any noise from in/outside.  Wifi speed was good and stable throughout the property.  View from the main balcony was nice - towards the city, only sadly due to the Hyatt hotel, this does sort of disrupt the city view.

Beach club

The hotel has it's own beach club about 5 mins walk away from the property.  Access to this beach club only for hotel guests (you have to show them the provided special keycards provided during check-in)  The area of the club is not that big, so i can imagine it can get crowded.  Service here was ok - although for unknown reason, tried to order twice some drinks, but after each time, they never appeared after waiting for more than 20 mins.  In the end, we just gave up.

IMG_20210703_164358975.jpg

IMG_20210703_164406381_HDR.jpg

In this area is also the hotel's seafood restaurant which I did read good reviews on (but did not try).

Pool

The hotel also has a pool area which was large - access to this area is mainly via the elevators, however from my assigned room, there was also the possibility to access the pool by a flight of stairs, which was very convenient.  For the towels, again you had provide the special pool key cards which you need to hand in when collecting and receive it back when returning the used towels.

Service here in the pool area was much better and friendly.  I was also again surprised by the reasonable price charged, which for me a big plus - as this concept is much better than charging crazy prices just because they can.  Another big plus for the property in my books.

IMG_20210703_155410617_HDR.jpg

IMG_20210703_155414641_HDR.jpg

View from the pool area was the same from the room.

Service

All in all service from the different hotel associates I met were great - very friendly and helpful.

Overall

There's also a special Skybeach at this property which is basically a pool at the roof of the hotel and a sort high-end area and an infinity pool.  Access comes with certain categoy of room.  For those without access, as far as I know, it cost 50€ per person for a whole day use.  This and maybe the Club Lounge use might be something I will try on my next visit.

The property seems to be stil busy with some renovations on some of the lower floor.  There is also a back entrace to this property (only possible after you've checked in) which leads to the Pendergardens side.  For me this was useful as I parked my car on this street, which made the walking distance much doable - yes too bad they charge for car park (as compared to the Hilton which was complimentary, as should be)

All in all I would certainly return to this property and do recommend it.

Great review nldogbert! What a good use of a free night; didn't realize this Intercontinental has a club lounge.

If you don't mind my asking, what did you do for 10 days on Malta? I'm planning a trip there myself, and 5 days seems like the upper limit for me.

Yes, this IC does have a lounge, although I am not sure if it's back to normal service or some adjusted service.
Well, for me 10 days was actually quite relaxing to explore both islands - the main and Gozo. In general for me Day 1-5: I spend it on the main island with
Day 1-3: exploring the nearby area. Take note Valetta itself is a whole day and if you want to explore more of the 3 cities, this will most probably take another day.
Day 4-5: Mdina and the surroundings and also small villages south and west of the island
Day 6-9: Northern part of the main island and Gozo (if you look at my instagram, one place you should not miss on Gozo is a visit to Te Mame wineary/local food producer - the lady owner is super-friendly and the local produce wine top quality (ok, maybe personal taste dependent).
Day 9-10: back to Malta and made the trip down to Marsxlokk (Haber 16 - yes it was on Netflix, but food is really good at a reasonable price, I still regret that I did not taste the lobster (but with the heat, I wanted to keep meals light). Cheaper fix would be at at Rising Sun bar, both establishment are at either end of the promenade/market area)

In fact even with 10 days, I still missed out on some places, this was also because it was burning heat which I decided to close the day from mid afternoon at the pool/lounge (when I was at the Hilton).

You will certainly enjoy the place and the food. Friendly people in general.

Cheers!

I'll definitely checkout your Ig! Do you know how the IC Malta compares to the Hyatt, Malta Marriott & Spa, or Westin Dragonara?

I am not sure from which point you would like to do the comparison, but I've never stayed at any of them. From what I know
Hyatt: From another online review/blogger site, in general it seems to be good - except that the pool was on the smaller side. If you have status with them, you're treated quite well.
Marriott: I nearly when for this based on price (compared to Hilton for my dates) however in the end I just went with Hilton. This property is located slightly further from the IC and if you're going for towards the place where things are happening, I'll stick to the Hilton or IC/HIX
Westin: This property was opposite the Hilton where I stayed, but the price was quite steep. This really seem to have a resort feeling based on the size of the compound. Location-wise, similar to the Hilton/IC/HIX.

Propose if you still want to know more - to check out the respective forums.

Cheers!

Has anyone had any recent stays here?

I am booked to go with my family in the UK October half term. I've booked via a Virtuoso rate as a Spire Ambassador. We are staying in the Family Suite which I can find zero information on anywhere, even the hotel's own website. They show a family room, but that isn't the same. It comes with Club and Skybeach access so we have all bases covered.

It will be interesting to see if any upgrades do come my way. The only one available above the Family Suite is the Penthouse Suite. Even on a Virtuoso booking I'd be surprised if we get moved up to that.

Thanks to the changes in the England Covid rules yesterday, it's looking extremely likely this will go ahead. Exciting!

Stay during Christmas 2021

I just complete a five night stay with family at IC Malta from 23. - 28. December 2021. I had booked 1 night club room, 2 nights Ambassador voucher club room and 2 nights on points.

At check in the first night we had already been upgraded to a Jr Suite on 14 floor. The hotel had not managed to see my other bookings and combine into one stay. This made the check in a long process and it had to be escalated before they accepted that we could keep the same room without lounge access for the last two nights on points booking. We also had to check out / check in again for each booking and get new keys. Not very elegantly handled…

The Jr Suite was more like an XL room - a bed and a sofa bed and a very large wardrobe. The room was located on an “inside corner”, was dark and badly in need of a renovation. Lots of wear and tear marks everywhere. Minibar / fridge was empty and not working. The air condition was not very efficient - not possible to get the room temp below 23 deg C at night.

The bathroom looked to be newly renovated and was quite nice and large size with separate shower and bathtub. But they had kept some of the old stuff in the room so it was a combo of modern and old. Half of the times the water never stopped running after flushing the toilet. The flush button looked to be from the 70’s…

There was a bad smell in the bathroom and wardrobe. We reported this to the hotel and they tried to fix it. The smell was gone for some hours (or maybe replaced with with a more pleasant smell) and then the smell was back again.

The club lounge was very nice with good facilities and excellent service. The breakfast was good and had a decent buffet selection plus an a-la-carte menu with eggs etc. Our favorite was the egg benedict and our daughter loved the waffles. Afternoon tea had a good selection of cakes but we missed the traditional serving with 3 tiers at the table. Evening canapé had three types of hot food and a good selection of wines and drinks. It was too cold to use the outdoor pool. The indoor swimming pool is a shared facility between IC and HIX. We enjoyed the pool, but again some maintenance / refurbishment is badly required both at the pool area and at the changing rooms / shower facilities.

Both at check in and check out there were nobody available to assist with our bags - so self service in and out of taxi. (btw the eCabs app worked well for us).

We stayed a week at Hilton Malta prior to arriving at IC. Overall we had a better stay experience at that facility: relatively modern room, excellent indoor pool facility, good lounge (but IC is much better) and a nice resort feeling.

Not sure we would select IC next time in Malta…

@SudOvest: I had a similar dilemma and quickly decided against IC and booked 10 days in HIE in mid-August. Two things are important to me: pool (HIE has its own and on top one can use IC pool at no cost) and gym (both hotel use the same external one, which is great). Beyond that, the room is just a place to sleep (and yet HIE looks sufficiently good and gets great reviews on TA). HIE bookings also include breakfast (but in any case, you can find great food in Malta on every corner and it does not cost a fortune, there is also a mall just opposite the hotel, with food outlets).

I think you made a great choice, and we did the same. Although we did splurge and in addition to the night at the HIE, usee a free night cert at the Marriott on the island. I hope it's worth it instead of a night at the HIE as Marriott Plats.
