Most important points to consider for a valid BRG:
1. The comparison website MUST bill in the same currency as the hotel .
2. The cancellation terms must be equal or better, than the terms by the hotels.
3. The Website needs to provide INSTANT confirmation.
4. The room names should match, but if you can demonstrate, that the room is comparable, it will also work with discrepancies in the name.
5. The price difference has to be more than either USD 1 or 1% (whichever is higher).
5.b In regards to hotels located in australia and New Zealand the price difference must be greater than 3% .
Hotels for which you will get reimbursed:
(Note: There have been significant problems with getting full reimbursements from IHG, especially for reimbursements in other currencies than USD)
IC Istanbul ( BRG claim from the 17.05.2013/ "Technical Difficulties")
IC Frankfurt ( BRG claim from the 20.08.2013/ "Technical Difficulties")

Booked a room on IHG. Successfully BPGed it. Booking disappeared from "upcoming reservations". Upon consultation of the booking on IHG.com it says booking cancelled.
Received no communication from the hotel or IHG what so ever.
Anyone ever experienced anything similar?

yes just 2 weeks ago at london Park Lane, but the hotel in fact could see the reservation. Best to call the hotel and reference the confirmation number.

Was the status on the IHG website really cancelled for you as well? Or was your booking on IHG simply not accessible or not found? The latter has happened more frequently in case of BPGs. At PL I indeed could no longer access my booking, but the reservation itself was fine.
Never had the experience that IHG showed it as cancelled.

On the other hand you could be on the hotels "list of unwelcome BPG guests"... again, give them a call to find out.

I have asked IHG this question but they will not answer it directly. If I book an advance purchase rate on IHG can I compare it to a flexible ie less restrictive rate on a third party website. Thanks for any advice

I experienced similar last week-end. As soon as I noticed this in my online account I e-mailed BPG helpdesk, about 4 hours later they replied that they had contacted the hotel's Front Office Manger who said they had a systems error. Both FOM and BPG helpdesk confirmed that I could rest assured that the Free Night would be honored... and so it did. Turned out to be a better stay than I expected.

Well, as a follow up to my case:
Even though there was no advance payment needed, and IHG website clearly mentioned no deposit, the hotel tried to charge my card for the full rate of the first night for a stay in 2016. This hold was declined by my card, as it did not have enough funds. So, the hotel cancelled the booking. BPG gone.

I never had this myself, but for hotelreservations I allways use a CC with which I rarely make payments so that there's allways plenty of coverage.
