Most important points to consider for a valid BRG:
1. The comparison website MUST bill in the same currency as the hotel .
2. The cancellation terms must be equal or better, than the terms by the hotels.
3. The Website needs to provide INSTANT confirmation.
4. The room names should match, but if you can demonstrate, that the room is comparable, it will also work with discrepancies in the name.
5. The price difference has to be more than either USD 1 or 1% (whichever is higher).
5.b In regards to hotels located in australia and New Zealand the price difference must be greater than 3% .
Hotels for which you will get reimbursed:
(Note: There have been significant problems with getting full reimbursements from IHG, especially for reimbursements in other currencies than USD)
IC Istanbul ( BRG claim from the 17.05.2013/ "Technical Difficulties")
IC Frankfurt ( BRG claim from the 20.08.2013/ "Technical Difficulties")

Since you can't modify a BRG without losing the BRG, one should always take care to set room search to 2Adults and book as 2adults as in theory (if not always in practise) an unhappy hotel can then refuse to allow a second occupant.
That said one does not need provide the name, say it will depend on your various friends plans nearer the time which friend will accompany you.
If you provide the second name, then if that person is not make stay date , you can't get a different person into room. A good reason i don't say John Smith as second name if I am asked.

Depends on the country where you will stay. Some hotels need the ID of every guest who will stay overnight.

I've never done BRG before but would like to try for a hotel in South Africa I'm staying in early August. IHG has best avail rate at 803 ZAR/night, which converts to roughly $75US. On hotels.com, expedia, etc, it's $67. Is there any way I can qualify for BRG free night despite this currency difference?
On a tangent, if I book thru IHG, how many IHG points do I earn (Plat status)? Is it just based on the US conversion price?

What's the verdict on two friends/co-workers of two different households (different addresses) staying at the same hotel with consecutive BRG's?

If Guest A stays Mon night on a BRG with a second person in their room .... then that second person can not have a BRG on Tuesday night as thatsecond person has benefitted from Monday nights BRG.
Similary if Guest B has a BRG Tuesday night, Guest A sharing would invalidate the Tuesday BRG.
Also not just consecutive nights but anytime 6ights either side of Guests A BRG date is not allowed.

I've recently succeeded at a BRG in Sydney. If you guys know of any BRG-able sites for China or Japan and would like to trade information, PM me! I've been having a hard time looking finding for cheaper 3rd party sites for China.

i think I found a BRG that I can use. It's for June in the general area of a conference I'll likely attend. IHG's best available daily rate is $117 + taxes/fees, Kayak has it for $114 + taxes/fees. Both rates are non-refundable. For some reason, if I break down the dates to 1-night stays, the prices are the same but for a 3 night stay, Kayak is cheaper.
I'm a newbie when it comes to BRG. The stay would meet all the criteria in the Wiki and IHG's BRG website, so I think this should work. But it seems I have to actually FIRST book the stay with IHG and then fill out the form and hope all is well. The problem with this is that this particular hotel wouldn't be my first choice for the area-- but I'd certainly be more interested ONLY if I can get the first night free. Is there a way I can show them the competing rate first without commiting to the non-refundable rate? Thanks

It's not that it's not allowed, as this is stated nowhere in the T&C's. However, the BRG team interprets the rules that if a person is staying in a comped room and named as a guest, regardless if they are the primary guest, they are invalid from getting a BRG for 6 days prior or after the stay.
With this being said....as long as you aren't named a guest, you're fine. And secondly, as long as you don't ask to stay in the same room as the first BRG, you're fine too.
