Skipping Rail legs
Ive only just become aware that some tickets (AF and KLM) - (this may also apply to other airlines in Europe?), issue Rail-Air tickets on some routes
Just as an example https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...20cc5248a9.png So why? Well here is where its interesting https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...588c3ceb9a.png This means I can take a ticket ABZ to AMS fly that leg and potentially skip the train getting 30XP for a J ticket compared to the normal 15XP The cost of the flight is within €50 the same as the ABZ-AMS but awarding double the XP. Has anyone had experience of similar rail-air tickets and how is it checked that you actually take the train leg? |
Several years ago I travelled IAD-FRA-Stuttgart train station on a LH air-rail ticket. I remember having to retrieve my checked bag in a special area near the entrance to the long-distance train station at the Frankfurt airport and being required to travel on the train in a car explicitly reserved for LH passengers. I assume that my ticket was validated by a conductor on the train, but I no longer clearly remember that happening. I flew back to Washington from MUC and did not have a rail-air ticket for the return flight.

There are several threads on this in the AF and KLM forums, including a master thread "Skipping a Train Segment" https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/air-...segment-6.html

I've definitely seen reports of folks having tickets cancelled due to appearing to skip rail legs (even though they claim they haven't). I wouldn't risk it.
