Transit IAH 2hrs 15mts possible?
Hi,
We arrive (all being well) from New Zealand (Air New Zealand) at Houston (IAH) Terminal D on Thursday 7TH December at 14:05hrs.
Depart Houston (IAH) Terminal E on Thursday 7th December at 16:20hrs for Amsterdam, United Airlines.
Transit time: 2hrs 15mts.Is this sufficient time for transit?

If on 1 ticket, go ahead/no issue.
If on separate tickets; I wouldn't do it.
Transit: You can't stay in transit/airside in USA; you need to enter the US/pass immigration and proceed to check-in with UA, i.e. you need ESTA (or visa?) for US to be allowed to travel.

As above need to go through USA border. USA does not have the concept of transit
Select IAH -->https://awt.cbp.gov/
Similar question asked here a few weeks ago in the opposite direction-->Is 1hr 50 enough at IAH (connection to NZ Flight
At a *very* few airports bags can International to International Transfer

International to International Transfer is offer at a limited number of airports and just to certain carriers at that airport.
UA @ IAH
AA @ MIA & DFW
DL @ DTW & ATL
there may be others but it is a very limited program. It start as a pilot may be 10 years ago and has not been expanded
So, no to ITI at EWR (UA or anyone else)

Thank you very much for the responses which is appreciated.
Yes, we are on one ticket with Lufthansa , but travel is with United Airlines and Air New Zealand.
Will that make a difference?
Opps... sorry I should have checked with the search engine before posting.
I'll certainly check out the posts - many thanks.
We also have the ESTA sorted.
Thank you again & take care.

With 1 ticket if Air NZ is late its a Air NZ/UA problem. Not yours. They have to get you to AMS
If a long delay at the US border would hope it becomes a UA problem.
IAH border at 14:00 looks a busy time, but not as busy as 18:00.
Ask Air NZ AKL about International to International bag transfer (no USA customs check). May or may not happen.

For a generic discussion of IAH connections, see Consolidated IAH connection time/logistics-Domestic & International, especially the wiki map.
But as mentioned, arriving passengers must enter the USA immigration and clear customs at IAH. As you are arriving on NZ, your bags will need to be picked up and taken thru customs. UA has a bag re-check area just outside customs

Many thanks for the valuable information.
I’ll get onto AirNZ and ask about the, ‘International to International bag transfer’. Certainly sounds a lot better than; passport control/collect bags/deposit bags/passport control – if I have that correct?
I remember reading on the www that the, ‘average’ time at IAH customs terminal D at 1400hrs, on a Thursday was 16mts. Can’t locate the web address.
We are flying from AMS to AKL via SFO with UA – perhaps they have, ‘International to International bag transfer’?. At SFO we have six hours transit time. So, not too worried.
Forewarned/forearmed, means less stress on my wife and myself.
Your replies are really appreciated – thank you.

USA does not have any exit passport control or a separate international departure area. Just security. USA domestic & international flights depart from the same area.
International transit in USA is a pain. Do it once and many will happily pay extra next time (different routes~airlines) to avoid transiting USA.

The above comment was about the bag(s) and it is not going to save you considerable time; it is no issue to pick-up the bag(s) on the luggage belts and drop it off at the UA counters. The issue is that you need to go through US immigration (and customs) despite that you are only a few hours in the US.

Thank you for the comments.
It seems to me, we turn up, follow the signs (with fingers crossed) and hopefully all goes smoothly...
From what has been said we are a wee bit anxious.
Has no one anything good to say?
Not heard anything back from AirNZ for UA. Will keep you posted.

Hi,
Received the following reply from AirNZ:Houston airport advise they recommend a minimum of 1 hour 45 minutes between an Air New Zealand arrival and United Airlines international departure to Amsterdam.
Air New Zealand check-in staff should be able to tag your bags through to Amsterdam, providing United Airlines have opened their flight for them to do so.
The United States government requires all transit passengers collect their bags, and proceed through to the U.S Customs queues.
To date, no reply has been received from UA.
Take care.

Finally, a response from UA:
‘We want to make sure you get the best service possible, and since your email concerns a current or future flight the best resource for you is going to be united.com.
If for any reason you can't find what you're looking for and you need additional assistance, please reach out to us by giving us a call at 1-800-864-8331 (1-800-UNITED-1), visiting our United Customer Care Contact Center page (that includes international contact options) or reaching out to us via our Twitter or Facebook pages’.
The exact same question was sent to AirNZ who replied ( 3days ) promptly.
10 days later UA responded. Compare the responses.
