One way ticket alternatives

I need to arrange one-way ticket for a student from AMS-SEA mid-July timeframe. The best option I can find is ~$1850 which is more than twice the cost of a round trip with the same outbound date and random return date. The person I’m helping may or may not be able to use the return ticket due to unknown schooling schedule.

Is the best best option in such a situation to just buy a RT and hope you can use it? I assume there will be no refund option in such A scenario.

I’ve already looked at one way award options, unfortunately all are very high due to the high season. Are there any other ways to purchase a one way so the costs are reasonable?

TIA.

I'm seeing some mid-July dates where AMS-LHR-SEA is being offered for 30,000 AA miles + $137 USD.

Icelandair is offering a one-way fare of $953 -- which includes one checked bag and a carry-on -- for AMS-KEF-SEA on certain mid-July dates. (Fare is about $70 less with no checked bag.)

Thanks guv1976 ! Great find re AA. Unfortunately I have used up my AA miles and none of my cards are a transfer partner with AA. Ill see if the same is available on BA but probably the fuel surcharge will be a problem.

If you haven't had a Barclays AA card in a while (or ever), you can pick up an easy 60K AA miles by getting one now, and making one purchase -- of any amount -- with it. First-year annual fee waived. Details here:
