Global Entry vs CLEAR: DO I need both?
I'm confused. I already have Global Entry. Is there any reason I should get CLEAR? Any advantages? Amex will reimburse me for Clear but they can't explain to me the advantages when I already have Global Entry. Thanks for input.

YES. GE is about customs and facilitating entry at a border. GE also gets you PreCheck (easier and presumably faster TSA airport security). CLEAR gets you to the front of the line (PreCheck or regular) for TSA airport security. It also generally means that you don't need to show photo ID to go through TSA airport security since CLEAR uses eyeballs or fingerprints for ID.

It depends on the airport terminals you use. Far from every airport has CLEAR, and even at airports that do have CLEAR but the have multiple terminals, not necessarily every terminal has CLEAR.
I you mostly fly though airport terminals that don't have CLEAR, it won't much be of much use to you. And if you fly at times when the PreCheck line moves quickly, it's not clear (pardon the pun :) ) how much CLEAR would save you on top of PreCheck. And it may also depend on how often you fly. If you don't fly that often, even a few minutes saved per flight may not be worth the bother to you. I haven't found it worth it for me because at the times that I travel and at the airport terminals I use I typically get through PreCheck very quickly anyway. But then, not only do I not travel for business, I don't tend to travel at typical business travel hours. |
Good Morning, Good Evening All-
I have had Global Entry for about the last 10 years or so and my current GE expires at the end of October; I will renew before. I would say about 85% of my trips have been International, not sure if that matters. I have always been given TSA Precheck on my trips / boarding passes, but for some reason, the last 2 trips I have been on (last 4 sectors to be exact) I have not had TSA Precheck on my boarding passes. The first issue was in JFK in Nov 2021 and I was traveling with my wife (who has also had Global Entry for about the last 10 years). We had landed from LHR into JFK and we about to get on our last sector within the USA. On that last sector, my wife's boarding pass had TSA Precheck on it, but mine did not. I noticed when we went to the TSA Precheck line together and I was turned away. I went back to the Delta Check in desk and showed them my Global Entry card and the Agent was able to reprint my boarding pass with TSA Precheck on it. I flew again last week within the USA, again with my wife, and the same thing happened. I asked the Delta agent if she could reprint the ticket and she and her supervisor said that "that was not possible," even though I had a Delta agent do it the last time. They said I would have to take it up with "The Government." I asked the TSA Agent once I got up in the security line and she said it was "Delta's responsibility." I went back on my Delta profile and noticed that my Known Traveler number was showing in both the KT number section and the Redress Number, so I corrected that. I then called Delta and asked them if anything looked out of place on their and and they said it did not. I checked in for our flights home tomorrow and again my wife's boarding pass has TSA Precheck and mine does not. Has anyone had this experience or have any suggestions? Thank you in advance! |

For immigration/customs, Clear is useless while Global Entry is anything but that. For those who have U18 children who are 13 or older but happen not to have PreCheck/Global Entry/TTP membership and don’t happen to get PreCheck for their 13 or older minor children or themselves for whatever ridiculous reason DHS/TSA has, Clear members can take such children with them through the Clear lines and speed up the process that way even when only the accompanying adult has Clear membership. One reason at times to sign up for Clear when Amex reimburses it: to earn United miles on the relative cheap. |
