I am new to this site. I would like to find someone with knowledge on how to maximize points in booking a 45 year anniversary trip to Europe from either LAX, Las Vegas, or SLC to Barcelona on outbound and Paris back to either LAX, Las Vegas, or SLC.

Use Star Alliance points for outbound:
lax-fra-bcn

DL/AF points for return:
bcn-CDG (Paris)
cdg-lax

you should be able to do bcn -CDg-lax as a single ticket with a long layover in cdg.

Thank you! I will try that. We are booked on the Ritz Yacht Collection and leave from Barcelona and end in Malta and wanted to extend and go to Paris for a few days before flying home.

DL no longer allows free stopovers on award tickets. If one books BCN-CDG//CDG-LAX using DL miles, it will price as two separate award tickets.

now we see that OP will get to cdg from Malta, after their cruise. So they can just use DL/AF points for cdg-lax :-)
