CPT to SYD Help

I'm working on planning a trip and trying to maximize AMEX and Chase ultimate rewards point. Me and my fiancé are going on a vacation throughout Australia and New Zealand and are trying to make a put stop in Cape Town for a few days. I have figured out how to use our points for getting to Cape Town but am struggling to get from Cape Town to Australia using points. Does any have any suggestions or tips on to use points for cheap?

It's a rather limited route and often falls outside of the general redemptions. You may do better flying from South Africa to an Asian hub city and then buy revenue tickets particularly as the LCC are abundant.

Edit: Where are you starting from? Which programs are you searching via?

Qantas QF (Oneworld Alliance) fly JNB-SYD [Johannesburg Sydney]
South African Airlines SA (Star Alliance) fly JNB-PER
Not a cheap route. Not much traffic.

Or as above via Asia
Or via DOH (Qatar) / DXB (Emirates) / AUH (Etihad)

Air Mauritius may be a option for cash fares.

SYD is not the only international airport in Australia

To add to Mwenenzi's useful post, in the past when I've searched on paid fares it is usually cheaper (sometimes much cheaper) to take the longer route via Middle East (or Asia eg Singapore Airlines). Also check from Johannesburg, not just from Cape Town, since there are much more options from there.
