Thanksgiving: Better option
Hi all first time posting outside of WN or TSS forums. I have to work the day after thanksgiving every year. Traditionally, my family comes and visits me but this year I am going to visit them and we will have thanksgiving dinner Wednesday night. This is American thanksgiving btw. So I need to fly FLL-EWR on Thursday afternoon/evening. My options are a 3:45 B6 flight or a 7:45 WN flight. For those who have traveled on thanksgiving, which would be the better option? What is the airport like when everyone is eating their turkey dinners? thanks! |
Thanksgiving Day is a very light travel day in the US. It is the day before and Sunday after which are the busiest travel days of the year.
"Best' is subjective. Do you want to fly earlier or later? What is the price difference? Do you care about the hard and soft product differences, seat assignments and so on? |
Are these am or pm? If correct, I would go at 1945. No point in wasting the day. |
There is no B6 flight @ 3:45 pm. There is no WN flight @ 7:45 pm.
I see a 4:20 pm B6 flight for $133.20, and a 7:40 pm WN flight for $91.98. Only you know whether there is a good reason to spend the extra $41.22 to fly B6. |

jetblue also has an earlier flight at 1:41pm, although arriving at 4:43 might have some traveling for dinner
whereas southwest only has the one flight, being 7:40pm may include some departing an early dinner |
Best option - be kind to the airport and plane workers, whichever flight you take. While some of them might be happy getting in the hours, some are wishing they could be with friends and family.
For that matter, some of the pax might also rather not be flying just then, so the same comment goes for them. |

I guess more of my question is: ive flown and had family fly on thanksgiving morning, but is the airport experience different at 4pm and 8pm on thanksgiving night when most people are having turkey dinners? As for which flight to take - since you have to work the next day, maybe it depends on how much trouble it would be for you at work if your flight was canceled and you didn't get home until Friday? If it's not a big deal for you to miss work due to unforeseen circumstances, I'd probably take a later flight if I wanted to spend a bit more time with family on Thanksgiving Day. But if it would be problematic, then I'd look for an earlier flight and one where there was at least one or more backup options later in the day on that airline, just in case. |
Yes, and remember that Southwest doesn't interline with anyone, so if there's a problem with your flight, they can only put you onto another WN flight or give you a refund. BTW, is it cheaper to purchase a RT (from the same airline, as a single ticket) for this route? |
