While Flyertalk is AWESOME, most of it is completely over my head. I don't know what fare classes are or even know where to look for them...basically, I'm clueless beyond the obvious. I would like to know if there is a good book, or course that I can get to really teach me. I want something that goes beyond applying for credit cards to get rewards. I want to be educated enough to understand the posts in Flyertalk! Can someone point me in the right direction?

For AA, start by reading the Wikipost at the top of the page of the thread HELP DESK: MileSAAver / SAAver award questions, assistance (link). Read some posts. You'll get assistance there as well.

For AMEX, there's a "sticky" thread in the American Express | Membership Rewards forum, and a lot more information there.

There's no short cut or capsule - start reading, asking questions and learning. We've all had to do this. If you run across jargon, FT has a Glossary (Help -> Glossary from the blue menu bar across the top of the page).

If you can get to Chicago in October, you'll learn a ton at Chicago Seminars.

One thing you have to figure out for yourself is your own goals. Do you want to maximize domestic upgrades? international upgrades? lounge visits? free tickets for a companion? ... As you match your goals to the information in particular threads, you will find you can tailor your new "hobby" to those goals.
