Understanding Emirates flights codes
Hi guys

New poster here - just getting familiar with the terminology. Am expecting to be flying from the UK to Australia via Dubai and Bali regularly over the next few years and want understand the mindfield of frequent flyer programs and choose the best path for myself and my family.

Can someone explain how the code letters mentioned frequently throughout this forum work? Is there a webpage that explains it in simple English? i.e. I see people mentioning "I flew J to Sydney and flew Y to Dubai" etc.

If you put your cursor on HELP at the top of the page, there is a dropdown menu that lists Glossary, which you can click on and has quite a few of the terms and abbreviations.

Do you have any specific ones you are interested in at the moment?

Ok thanks Jerry. Nothing planned yet, planning to relocate from uk to Australia and trying figure out whether it's worth worrying about frequent flyer programs if we're only flying back and forth once/twice per year. (Plus my family who are staying will be flying back and forth so trying to understand if we can share points etc.)

Definitely join a ffp before you fly. Each person needs to have there own frequent flyer account.

You generally cannot share ff miles/points. But you can book award flights from your account for others, subject to t&c's.
A minority of ffp's have family pooling. BA does.
A small minority of ffp's allow you to transfer points/miles to others(family) for free or a fee. If paying a $ fee tends to be very poor value

Frequent flyers programs are tending to becoming frequent spender programmes (for ff miles). Many people now earn more ff miles/points/avios from non flying activities, like credit cards.

The market Australia to UK/Eu is very competitive with many possible airlines and prices. Do not spend $$ with an airline just to get a few ff miles/point that you may or may not be able to use in later years
