Thanks for the helpful responses.

As for how the agent stays in business, this is supplementary income and is not done as a living. I believe she's semi-retired. She is a 30-year expatriate and only books within Belize. She is extremely good in this one area having lived there for 30 years. That's why I wouldn't think of changing.

I thought I was clear. Perhaps not.

Most of the flights seem to be American. I have read negative things about AA. Should I avoid them if possible?

I have flown to Belize roughly a dozen times over slightly more years. Almost all the flights were on American. They have been fine, including one year when an approaching hurricane cancelled the BZE-MIA leg. Avoiding them because you've heard horror stories -- which, as others have noted would be true for any airline -- is unwarranted.

"I have an agent, but she's located in Belize and doesn't book international flights."

How does she make a living? I can't imagine that there's a whole lot of money to be made booking domestic flights within Belize.

That would have been my thought, too. Tropic Air and Mayan Island Air fly to pretty much the same places for pretty much the same fares; and at least at BZE you can just show up and buy a ticket on the spot, and be almost guaranteed to be on a plane within an hour, maybe two for the less-frequented destinations. My guess was she books the many tours in Belize.

Ah! And, since you've not been to Belize, that means you've been using her for other international things, like tours, cruises, hotels?

Hotels, but most of all, suggestions and general advice about what to do, arranging transport within the country, what areas to stay in and traveler tips. I can get hotel info just as easily on TripAdvisor, but some of her insights about Belize are invaluable. I could have easily booked the hotels myself but I wanted her to get the commission.

My flight is booked. American. Whew, finished.

Now, can someone tell me the best sandals to wear when caving? -) Just joking.

Advice on booking a flight to Belize

if you're travel agent can't handle international flights, use another agent when you need an international flight. I don't understand the issue.

If your question was just whether flying AA was okay, that wasn't very clear.
