First Class - overhead bin and snack etiquette?
 

OK, I'm sure this will cause all sorts of fun conversation, but I'm curious:

I had a first class (yeah I know, no "real" FC, etc.) on Delta from ALB to San Juan (via ATL).

We were in the 2nd row, but not the "first" people on the plane (fine, no biggie).
Anyway, upon opening the overhead bin, another FC passenger had apparently put his guitar in there, so there was no room for either of our bags.

I asked the flight attendant if he could assist us with our bags, and the FA put the guitar in the closet area (whatever you call it) and voila!

Q: Did I do "bad" by asking the FA for assistance (I try to be polite).

Now on to the FC Snack Basket.

Since we were towards the front, we got first "dibs". I took the breakfast cookie (my favorite) and something else (now I can't remember what, maybe a biscoff or something)?

Q: Am I being a piggy for taking 2 items? (not the same item)?

So now I'll sit back and enjoy the show.

Relax, you were fine on both counts.

1. No. "Bad" = (a) asking FA to do heavy lifting into/out of overhead bins, or (b) removing another pax luggage from your bin, *unless int'l F with devoted bins and/or easily-reshiftable item (cf guitar in closet). Asking the FA was reasonable.

2. No.

The FAs fill the snack baskets with a reasonable amount that fits easily. When they run out of something, they go back for more. The aircraft has plenty. Going back to the F galley is not exactly a long hike. Within reason, take all you want.

Since this has been posted as a general info desk question, I'm going to point out that this is not always the case.
On many flights, typically regional aircraft, one snack basket is stocked, wrapped in plastic wrap, for the flight and cannot be refilled mid flight.

That being said, taking 2 is fine. Taking 6 to have snacks for your destination is not.

Taking two snacks is perfectly fine. On LAA they are stocked with at least 2-3 snack baskets for a cabin of 16 people, which is usually enough for everyone to get at least 2.

The carry-on bag thing was not rude- although you might run into some flak from some FA's about asking for an "assist" as technically they don't have to lift any passenger bag. Looks like particular FA showed quick thinking by moving the guitar to the closet. It's a win-win for everyone ^

Another option is using the bin across from you. Bins are not allocated to particular seats.

Overhead bin space is a shared resource for everyone.

In this case, those overhead bins were already full. (I try not to be a gate louse, so inevitably we're usually the "last" in Priority line if doing FC/SkyPrioritiy/whatever).

Generally I try to avoid taking "other people's" bins mainly because if there's not enough room for my stuff, I take up room in the other bin, then other passenger comes along and they can't put their stuff in the bin that I put my stuff in and they can't put stuff in "my" bin either.

Kinda like when you get on the plane and you see someone put their stuff in the first bins (even if single class cabin) and then walk all the way to the back of the plane. Now when "front" row (regardless of whether it's FC or not) passenger comes in, they have nowhere to put their bag and inevitably the FA has to put it all the way at the back (where original passenger "should've" put their bag). Now when de-planing, person in front has to wait for everyone to leave and then get to back of plane to get their bag.

But good to know that I followed "proper" rules. LOL!!!

+1. I am actually surprised that the FA did offer to put the guitar in a closet when the passenger boarded. Regarding the snacks, they have plenty....enjoy :)

Including int'l F? Maybe it's just tacky to put your stuff in someone else's bin without asking. (That came out worse than intended)

There's no such thing as "someone else's bin" unless you're in one of those F capsules that has its own storage. Overhead bins are shared space, as FA's frequently announce. It's both most convenient and courteous to use a bin over or near your seat, if you can. If there's no room there, you can use any available bin in your cabin. Nobody has any right to tell you "it's over my seat, therefore it's mine."
