afraid to go to china

after i saw this video on youtube. how safe is it? :(

Welcome to FlyerTalk.

I fail to see how a video caricature of the Chinese government infers danger traveling to China, which many of us do (and some FlyerTalk members are residents).

I'd suggest a bit more in depth research, including visiting our China forum.

I'm sure any competent video satirist could make your home town look as dangerous as the worst parts of Victorian London (and some of them were pretty bad).

I've been to China, including two weeks in 2015. While large Chinese cities have many of the same issues that large cities anywhere have, on balance I feel totally safe there - at least as safe as I feel walking around my home town.

That said, the video doesn't mention this, but it is an aspect of safety: many Chinese drivers didn't grow up with automobiles. They can see them more as a badge of success or an indicator of man/womanhood than as a means of transportation. That leads some of them to drive like maniacs. I saw far more minor accidents there than I would expect to see in the same period of time in countries where automobiles have been part of normal life for much longer.

And watch out for electric scooters: you won't hear them coming, they move pretty fast, and they can't stop on a dime!

That's a pretty funny video!

I'm sure the intent was to get a reaction, but I'll bite. You don't say why you are going to China, but I'd ofer you the fairly obvious suggestion that you may wish to broaden your research materials regarding the countries you plan to visit. Relying on YouTube is lazy and not smart.

Some British relations of my wife's remain terrified to come to the United States because, owing to media portrayals, they think the whole country's a shooting gallery and they could be killed. Oddly, they were always (until recently, anyway) willing and happy to holiday in Tunisia.

Please leave your ignorance safe in your home country and DO NOT go to China.

I think it's a troll.

I have no idea what OP thinks that video-- an obvious political parody using stock footage-- tells him/her about the risk or safety of visiting China.

I suspect OP was involved in posting the video on YouTube and started a thread about it here as a way to increase views.

This is pretty blatant trolling, but I would have thought a video showing Chinese military power would have made one feel more safe, not less. :p

And they drive on the pavements.

Also: thick-soled shoes essential when using the toilet facilities.

I'd be afraid to go to China because of the smog not getting mugged.

bobert24 Nov 9, 2015 10:38 pm

Obvious troll is obvious. But pick a better video next time - I completely fail to see what's supposed to be scary. What? China has a military? Better not visit.

I feel far safer in Bejing at 4:00 in the morning walking down to the square to see the flag raising, than in Paris,

Don't think you have ever been to China, I feel safer in China than Paris, and have said that for many years,
