connecting flight in MAD, checked bag info

Hello, long time lurker, 1st time poster here!

DD is in Porto Portugal & tomorrow will fly to MAD then on to LHR with a checked bag. She purchased the tickets online (Cheapoair) and it was booked as 1 flight (with a connection). The flight(s) are operated by Iberia on its partner airlines.

She has been told by a friend that she'll need to collect her bag at MAD then recheck it for the next leg to LHR. Since she only has an 80 min layover she's hoping that isn't true. She's really freaking out as this is her 1st international flight alone (travelled over there with aunt who is staying longer), especially when going from 1 relatively non-English speaking country to another.

I've been trying to search online about those connecting flights with not much luck.

TIA,
~Diane

"it was booked as 1 flight (with a connection)"

By definition, if there is a "connection," then it is not one flight. Is it one ticket, or two tickets sold by Cheapoair in a single transaction? (How many ticket numbers do you have, one or two?)

If both flights are on one ticket, I would be surprised if the baggage were not checked through to LHR upon her check in at Porto. She should certainly ask for the bag to be checked through to LHR, and verify that it has been by examining her baggage claim check.

Welcome to FT!

If you're referring to the Air Nostrum operated flight connecting to Iberia mainline she should be fine. At check-in there will be English speaking staff and she can confirm the bags are being sent to LHR. Have her look at the bag tags to be sure it says LHR in big letters not MAD.

You should be fine to through-check to LHR. There is no theoretical requirement to re-check at MAD.

What is DD?

Thanks for the quick replies.

Yes she is on the Air Nostrum flight from OPO>MAD then an Iberia flight from MAD>LHR. So she has 2 diff flight #'s (obviously) but she checked for both flights in online at once.

I already told her to ask at check-in to be sure & also look at the baggage tag & make sure its says LHR not MAD.

She'll be so glad to see family at LHR!:D

The baggage tag should say both MAD and LHR, since the bag must be loaded onto the OPD-MAD flight, and then transferred (by the airline) at MAD.
