Is a 40 minute layover in O'hare enough time to transfer?

I have a flight with AA that I booked through priceline and they gave me a layover for 40 minutes from SFO to ORD (2411) and ORD to LGA (365). My flight arrives at ORD at 3:52pm and the other flight leaves at 4:35pm. Will that be enough time to make the connection?

It might be; I'm sure that the connection satisfies the minimum connecting time (MCT) from AA domestic to AA domestic at ORD. But if your in-bound flight is late, you could have a problem.

If you mis-connect, AA will accommodate you on its next (available) flight.

I might have to run to the gate just in case. Thank you :)

If you're not familiar with AA's gate layout at ORD, be sure to look for the terminal map near the back of AA's in-flight magazine; you should find a copy in your seatback pocket on your SFO-ORD flight.

And be sure to listen for the connecting-gate announcement that a flight attendant will usually make as your first flight approaches ORD: it's possible that a gate change could have been made after you received your ORD-LGA boarding pass at SFO.

Thank you, this will definitely help me get there quicker! :D

40 minutes is awfully close. By the time you taxi to your gate and deplane, your connecting flight will be boarding or about ready to board.

I will play Captain Obvious for a minute here...

1. Get a seat as close to the door as you can. If your near the back of the plane it could be 10 minutes or more before you deplane. This may be a time it is worth it to purchase one the choice extra seats. (I am not sure of your FF status.)
2. As others have stated know which gate you are coming into and which gate your flight goes out of. Assuming you have a smart phone, check the connecting gate as you taxi in.
3. Consider checking your bag. Others may disagree with this advice, but you do not want anything to slow you down. You may be running. Having said that, I don't typically check my bag, even in tight connections. Why? Because I am usually in first or the very front of coach, so I am one of the first 10 or so out the door and I have learned to walk very quickly!

I would check the load level for the flight after yours in case you mis-connect.

Good luck and please report back.

I appreciate your reply! Very helpful!

I had to book seats in the back since those were the only ones available for me and my wife to be together and now there isn't any other open seats before row 25.

The good thing is that we will only be taking backpacks as carry ons so it shouldn't slow us down.

How do I check load levels on flights? I never thought that was possible!

Flight is next month but I will report back :p

To get an idea of how open a flight is, go to the AA site. Click on Plan Travel, then View Available Seats, then put the flight you want to view in there. It will show you all the empty seats. It is not exact, some people will not have selected seats yet, but you will know if there are 2 seats are open or 50. Obviously, the more seats that are open, the more likely you can hop on that flight in case of a mis-connect.

Another thing to do is check the weather and flights the day of. If you are going to mis-connect because of delays before you take off, call AA. Sometimes they will rebook you before you even take off. (e.g. If the ORD route is full maybe there is availability via DFW.)

The connection is within MCT. As the onward destination is LGA, there are later flights, hopefully with availability, if OP misconnects.

OP - If you are running late xSFO, ask AA to rebook you onto a non-stop to JFK, which can be done in IRROPS.

If you fly American Envoy into ORD, and you have a 21" roller, and you are on a ERJ145 or a CRJ700, you will have to gate check the bag. Waiting for that when you deplane, is a 10 minute wait.

10 minutes prior to departure, the cabin door shuts.

So a 40 minute connection with a gate checked bag is more like 20 minute connection in my opinion. And you are very much so relying on absolutely no delays. If you have to sit in a penalty box for ANY time at all, you are at risk.

AA does not use regional jets on the SFO-ORD route.

40 minutes is generally long enough for any domestic connection at any airport in the US -- provided that the inbound flight is not tardy. Just don't dilly dally between flights and sit in a forward/aisle seat on your inbound flight with minimum carry-on baggage.

This thread is now closed as the question is off topic for this forum, and appears the OP has received several good pieces of advice. If further information is needed, please post additional related inquiries in either the dedicated AA forum, or in the Chicago destination forum.

Good luck, and safe travels!
