Exclamation LAX->Tokyo Miles Question

In desperate need of advice. When US Airways was still Star Alliance, we used to book biz class on ANA (LAX<->Tokyo) via US Airways so as to avoid the extremely high fuel surcharge that ANA charges. Now that we can't make that booking via US Airways anymore, is it possible to book ANA via United (or another US carrier) so we don't have to pay the high surcharges? What is the best strategy? Also, what is the mileage transfer rate (ie 1-to-1)? Please help!

I believe both of these UA codeshares are on ANA metal - If that helps.

NRT / UA 9685
HND / UA 9721

The presence or absence of codeshares is usually irrelevant when booking award flights, as typically one must book an award flight under the operating carrier's flight number. But UA does not collect any surcharges when redeeming Mileage Plus miles on any carrier.

Of course, Dividend Miles may now be redeemed on oneworld member JL.

But hasn't United just implemented a surcharge as well?

Or does this only apply to flights originating from Japan?

What do you mean by "the mileage transfer rate"? No miles are being transferred. If you are referring to using UA miles to book award travel on another *A carrier, you are bound by the rules and regulations of UA's FF program. If you are referring to earning UA miles when flying on another *A carrier, you are bound by UA's policies for flying on that carrier in the specific fare class in which you are ticketed. Details are available at www.united.com.

I think it only applies to cash tickets sold by UA, not to award redemptions made with Mileage Plus miles on UA or its partners.
