Points to Hawaii?

My daughter and son in law have never been interested in my hobby until now. They need miles to get to Hawaii next July for a wedding. Currently no miles with any airlines..To start I was looking for them to each get US airways/40000 pts and AAdvantage Master card/30000. Only a 2000 dollar spend but do the airlines need to merge to combine those miles. Thanks for any ideas

Points to Hawaii?

Right, you cannot combine miles at this point. It is presumed the programs will merge sometime in 2015, but it is very hard to get award tickets to Hawaii for peak travel dates, like July. If you were to wait, you will likely find award availability gone.
US Airways does not allow one way redemptions, but AA does.

Look into opening an Avios card? you can get a Rountrip flight for 25k Avios
Or amex points and UR and spg can be used for a ticket for 35k miles

What about Hawaiian Airlines? Can you combine them with AA miles, which they partner with? They'll be flying out of Omaha, NE. Thanks..

Not from Omaha, you can't.

Since both AA and UA miles can be redeemed for one-ways, I suggest that they focus on accumulating those miles. There may be better offers than 30,000 miles for a Citi/AA card: check the FT Credit Cards forum.

UA miles can be earned with both the Chase/UA card, and with the Chase Sapphire Preferred card. If Chase has branches in Omaha, the applicant(s) might get a lower minimum-spend requirement by applying in person, rather than over the phone or on the Internet.

Avios points, available with the British Airways credit card, will cost 25,000 points roundtrip from California. Avios is distance based. Flying another segment from Omaha would add to the cost.

35K SQ miles round trip U.S. to Hawaii. They partner with both United and US Airways (not sure if you can include flights from both airlines on the same itinerary). With recent changes, SQ miles may be the easiest to accumulate - UR, Amex MR, SPG, and Citi TY all transfer to SQ 1:1 (with the standard bonus if transferring SPG points).
