I am interested in the gift of mentoring. I had a mentor get me started but I do not bother him incessantly. I just bother the threads, though. :D
Because I did not understand MS well in the beginning, I have made various mistakes. I didn't have BB because I had trouble getting my SERVE (that I didn't know I still had; thought sure it was closed due to inactivity) closed (over 2 months) and did the MO trail but was risk averse. I did HRB and JHP until the rug was pulled. TIA for considering me to mentor. I won't bother you much. Oh, and that travel agent "thing", no worries. Former occupational path tread. Though I do have difficulty with UA upgrade comprehension. But, I use the appropriate thread for those questions. In your example above of Flyertalk-speak :D :D, the oldtimers understand every word you're saying. Newer posters haven't a clue. ;) Sometimes I'm guilty of this, but not always. Can you re-write your post this way... Because I did not understand MS (manufactured spend) well in the beginning, I have made various mistakes. That would be a huge help to the new kids around here if we took the time to write this. As a matter of fact, I think all of us should re-program ourselves to do this. You never know who's reading. |

Newbies can do well by seeking to contribute as well as glean, right from the word go, and searching for answers before asking well-worn questions. And I'm afraid I am not going to let my coffee go cold whilst conducting a major search for a cheap seat to Manila on your behalf. ;)
What do I mean? Well, there's a class of basic, factual question that any mature person should be able to figure out on their own (and honestly, most adolescents probably can) in this day and age. Questions like: "How far is it to drive from A to B?" "What's a typical airfare from C to D?" "What four-star hotels are in city E?" Basic online travel tools and search engines can answer these questions. I'd rather not see FT discussions cluttered with them. I prefer to help with the questions demonstrating understanding of the basic facts and asking for the benefits of experience and insight, like: "On the drive from A to B, which of these three side-trips do you recommend?" "On the long flight from C to D, which airline offers the best economy service?" "Which four-star hotels in City E have really spacious standard rooms for my family of four?" |

Because I did not understand MS (manufactured spending) well in the beginning, I have made various mistakes. I didn't have BB (Bluebird, Amex product, harnesses the power of checking and bill pay while serving credit card purchases) because I had trouble getting my AMEX SERVE, a debit-like card, closed. I didn't know I still had the account; thought sure it was closed due to inactivity. Anway, it took almost three months to close. While waiting on the SERVE account to close, I trod the MO (money order) trail but was risk averse. I also opened debit card accounts with HR Block (HRB) and Jackson Hewitt (JHP) to liquidate funds from Vanilla Reloads until the rug was pulled via CVS policy change. Anyway, TIA for considering me to mentor. I won't bother you much. I only began MS in Oct.,'13. Oh, and that travel agent "thing", no worries. Former occupational path tread. End of summer bump.
If you're new to Flyertalk, feel free to post to this forum and ask your question(s). Dan |
Hello All,
I'm semi-new to flyertalk. I've been using flyertalk for years to cross reference hotel reviews. I typically am able to handle most travel itineraries but I am about to embark on planning my honeymoon and I could really use some advice here. Are the award booking services my best bet here? I live in CA and I am trying to figure out a good Asia + Maldives itinerary or anything equivalent for December 23rd to January 30th (I'm willing to leave before Christmas if it makes sense). We plan on doing a fair amount of scuba diving , but my fiance and i are pretty big backpacker(in the camping sense) too. I think the plan is not to get "too" down and dirty this trip though. i have about the following hotel points to use: 800k starwood points (platinum) 1000k marriott (platinum) flight points: 300k AA I'm not bound to the hotel chains, but I am willing to burn them too. I'm trying to figure out what is the best/smartest way to proceed! Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks! Kevin |
I'm a relative newbie and though I've been reading some, i often get stuck on acronyms. Is there a location where i might find a guide for these? I've been working on learning the ins and out of MS and that's where I've come across this the most (other than city codes, which I am fine with..)
Thanks so much. Looking forward to being mentored! I appreciate those willing to spend the time! |
Here's the F/T glossary (via the help menu at the top of every page)

I'll throw my hat into the ring - this thread was pointed out to me back in June, but I was swamped at the time. I will probably be able to best help folks with questions about Southwest (abbreviated WN) and British Airways (BA) from a USA resident perspective [e.g. earning and "burning" (using) their frequent flyer currency called Avios; earning elite status, etc.] - but don't hesitate to send me a Private Message on any topic. If I can't help I will let you know!

Hello everyone, I'm a noob who has been lurking around here for a while.
I'm in CT so I fly out of BDL (with the option to use NYC or BOS) and would LOVE a mentor. I'm preferential to UA (they somehow always take awesome care of me) but also have a few AA flights already booked. No status but working on it starting next year and plan on doing some mile runs/ the American challenge beginning in February. Starting to pick up on lingo and figure out ways to maximize points with my chase preferred/using United shopping for work purchases (shhhh- they don't know). Could definitely use pointers by from a vet if anyone wouldn't mind help :) |
Newbie
As a newbie I am looking for tips and tricks to learning the FF system. I am doing my research on this forum and other websites and forums that are for FF. Even though I haven't begun my FF yet I am still learning and figuring out how to book my first MR so that when I am ready I am able to do it. Yes it would be nice to have a website you can go and someone can do book it for you. It's a leaning system.

Hi folks,
I recently ended a long, drag-out civil suit after being assaulted, and am finally free to travel. Unfortunately, one of the things I ended up with out of the extended deal was some sub-par credit. Would love to find a mentor with some experience circumventing some of those accompanying hassles, especially now that I am no longer tethered to one place. My experience with this sort of thing consists of a lot of forum research and very little practice. I'm a quick and eager learner though, when pointed in the right direction! |
Hello everyone,
I'm a long-time lurker but haven't posted very often because other posters seem to get in more quickly to answer questions than me... I'm UK based and have been travelling regularly for the past 20 years. I'm most familiar with BA, Qantas and Cathay Pacific but have probably flown on most airlines in Europe, North America and Australasia. I belong to a few hotel programmes too. Like everyone, my time is precious but if one or two newbies wanted some guidance then I'll try to help. I don't visit FT every 10 minutes so please be patient if you send me a Private Message (PM)! Also well done to the Original Poster (OP) for setting this initiative up. thedavebloke |

Hello FTers!! I am a total newbie! I got fed up with never have enough money to take the kind of vacation I want to, and stumbled across Flyertalk. I have been reading non stop since (about a week now - and I speed read so thats a LOT of reading :p). I am trying to absorb as much information as I can about Manufactured spending right now, as I won't have vacation time until March (had to use all mine this year for a surgery).
Figured if I can do some manufactured spending and earn some points then when I am ready I can look more into traveling on those points. I have signed up for a Serve account and plan to start small and work my way up to bigger and better things (if I can figure them out, some are still confusing to me). I Plan to read the threads from the 'old timers' but just thought I would say hi here so if I do PM someone they have some clue who I am. Or if anyone is bored and has some tips for a total newb besides read, read, read (which I'm already working on, I promise) I would love to hear them. Thanks, M |
