Hi, Merry Christmas to everyone.

I don't know how many people will be available to help today but i'll try.

Me and my family are due to fly on boxing day.

My sister has suddenly come down with food poisoning. It's quite bad.

We are flying with Virgin and their website is really unhelpful.

I have no idea how to find out if her ticket is refundable or not?

I've read the receipt top to bottom and can't seem to find it. I have also logged into the online place and nowhere does it say non-refundable or refundable?

Can someone please tell me how to find out? I'd rather not call them yet.

Obviously the advice on what to do after that depends on whether it's refundable or not.

Most tickets are not refundable, or have a large fee to change or have credit towards a future flight.

Where are you flying? Where did you purchase the ticket? What class of service?

We're going to America.

I just read that class thing. Very strange.

We are class O going and Class q returning. It says they are both non-refundable.

Does this include medical reasons? If my sister went to the doctor and got a note would it make a difference?

1. The place to start is with your travel insurance. That should cover a full refund or change fee for her ticket, depending on her needs.

2. You can always call the carrier and see what can be done. The likely answer is that medical conditions are dealt with by #1 (insurance), but it is always possible that you hit the right agent who is willing to move the flight a bit (how much more time does she need)?

If you are completely upside down on the trip - meaning that you have non - refundable rickets, you have no travel insurance and you cannot fly - as stated above you are in a hard spot and need to get a little luck with a friendly agent. To increase your odds I'd suggest getting a note from the doctor that says she cannot fly - not just a note that says she is under his care. That will often distinguish you from others with similar requests.

Non-refundable tickets sometimes have a medical clause re passenger/immediate family illness. I don't know if Virgin has the same but worth looking into.

See the following - the contacts listed here may be able to help:

Good luck!

Non refundable doesn't necessarily mean that you are completely out of your money. Typically you can change the flight - for a fee, and apply the residual value of the non refundable ticket to the new ticket. So if you get a CSR with a bit of christmas spirit he/she may wave the advance purchase requirement on any new fare.
