When to get to airport if online checking in
Hi
I just need some advice, as I am checking in online for the first time. If I do this, do I need to get to the airport quite so early, like 3-4 hours before. We are leaving from Heathrow to New York (leaving Boxing day so hoping traffic will be good) Any advice appreciated |
Airline, terminal at LHR, and class of service/elite status? Will you be checking any luggage? Is this an international or domestic ticket?
The conformance deadlines at LHR are strictly binding. |

the only thing you skip is the actual checkin. you will still need to drop off luggage and pass the screening process, as you are travelling to the us. then security + immigration , so in the end you will need 2 hours to get to the gate stress free.

IIRC it's possible to fly LHR-MAN-NYC. Or one could start with a schengen flight to CDG, FRA, AMS, etc. Another possibility would be LHR-DUB-NYC. With questions like this, it's better that the person asking provide complete details, including airline, terminal, class of service, routing, etc.

Personally I still get to the airport at the same time I would if I had to check in there. I don't trust traffic, lines, security, ect will be any better. If I am too early I just go to the lounge - or at LHR you could do some shopping.

Agree with Ept0202. My home airport is IAD (washington) and I never feel safe cutting my time short there. I once arrived 2 hours early for a domestic trip on a Sunday morning in August and I don't know what was going on, but the lines were out the door as if it was Christmas. I missed my flight and the soonest they would rebook me was the next day because it was my fault for not getting there in time. (Despite the fact that I was in line for 40 minutes.)
If your travel plans aren't flexible, don't chance it! |
