only airtel & aircel if you want to go the official route....but there are many many cellphone shops that will cut the sim for you so you can technically use any network here....

Vodafone is officially providing nano sim's too.

And of course there is that Khan Market dealer we discussed last week. Nothing official about him! ;)

When I visited Delhi in November, there were new rules in place the meant that you could not get a SIM immediately, even with all the paperwork ready. Airtel told me to wait 4-7 days -- and it took longer.

This may get better once they catch up with the new rules, but don't expect to be able to buy a SIM and have it work right then.

See excerpt below ... or google for the full stories. Apparently these rules became effective early November, since the Westin told me that they would have got me a SIM if I had arrived a few days earlier

DoT bars sale of pre-activated SIMs
New Delhi, August 20, 2012, DHNS:
Details of subscribers must; violators to be imposed Rs 50,000 fine

Conforming with a Supreme Court order, the government has instructed all mobile service providers not to sell pre-activated SIM cards to subscribers.

A joint expert committee constituted by the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) issued fresh instructions on activating the connection of new subscribers, both prepaid and postpaid, and warned the service providers against violation of the rules.

“Pre-activated SIM card is not to be sold. A penalty of Rs 50,000 per such connection shall be levied in addition to immediate disconnection of mobile service,” the committee said.

Same issue happened to me. My visit last 2011, it took them 3 days before my sim got activated.

Then August this year, I was just lucky I had a friend who just came from India and brought his prepaid sim with him. He was generous enough to lend it to me.

BLR

Does BLR International have Mobile Operators available 24/7? Can a prepaid SIM be purchased? Any recent experiences? I've read the recent bulletins mentioned above.

I need to know what my India options are going to be, as I can't afford to wait.

Bumping the thread. Travelling to CCU in a few weeks and will need both a device and SIM. (In US with a Verizon CDMA phone, which is useless in the rest of the world...)

I actually don't need voice, just data. Is there a place that I can purchase a mobile hotspot and prepaid SIM for data only?

Thank you. Do you recommend purchasing a hotspot device there also, or procuring/unlocking one of my own before I arrive? Or even better, is there the possibility that Airtel or Vodafone will allow the rental of a device for ~1 week?

Nobody rents these that I know of.

Further, I am not sure that Airtel or Vodafone even has these as options.

You would be advised to check their websites first - but even that does not guarantee anything.
