Its only 30 to 40 kilometers. 400 to 600 rupees for a regular aircon cab (may be higher if you rent it directly at the airport but hell, 600 rupees is $12, so not much higher).

Are the taxis legally allowed to operate across the borders, or does it require a taxi switch?

You go to one side of the border, walk some distance to the customs post and complete departure formalities. Walk across some more to the pakistani customs post and complete arrival formalities. And then catch another cab from there to Lahore.

You'll actually find people running buses, shared ride minivans / SUVs etc so that if you dont mind sharing with a bunch of people, you can get a far cheaper ride. If you are making that trip with any kind of luggage you have quite a lot of schlepping across borders to do. Rivals trips between terminals at Heathrow.

Any updates on this Amritsar airport to border route? Updates on taxi fares, border opening times?

I am planning to take a Doha to Amritsar flight and then cross the border. A few days later I need to cross back and take an Amritsar to Delhi flight.

Do Uber operate on either side of the border and up to the border?

no uber....taxi is normally the only option....around inr 1.5k would be the right fare....you may have to negotiate with the drivers....border crossing is open from 10am - 5pm....

Thanks. I'm hearing Uber is available now on the Pakistani side. Will come back if I get any more details. My plans are slightly different now and I may only cross the border one way from Lahore to Amritsar.

Yes I did. My main issue became the trouble on the Indian side. The bus was stopped for a week or so due to some riots following the arrest of a religious cult leader, if I remember correctly. But the bus started running again a few days before I was due to travel.

I used Uber extensively in Lahore. I used Uber car from Lahore airport and Uber rickshaws most of the time.

I flew into Lahore and then made one way trip to Delhi on the bus. A minibus leaves Lahore at 6am. You have to report by 5am. About an hour after departing it arrives at the Wagah border. There's a nice highway most of the way now. Just before border there's a stop for breakfast. The minibus then takes you to Pakistani immigration and customs. On the other side of Pakistan customs building the Indian bus arrives. This bus then takes passengers across the line and through border gates to the Indian immigration and customs. And then onto the public roads.

The bus makes a stop at a floating restaurant for lunch and then just past Ambala for a tea break. All meals are included in the ticket price.

Throughout there's police escort in front and behind the bus, plus a few security guys inside the bus. By Punjab police in Pakistan, and by the police of the local district in India (Amritsar, Ludiana, Ambala, Panipat, Delhi, etc) . So as we crossed district boundaries the escort cars would veer off and be replaced by two new cars with blues and twos. When we stopped for lunch or tea the whole restaurant was closed to public and reserved for India-Pakistan bus passengers and armed guards positioned around bus and restaurant.

Altogether I counted about 12 security personnel, one driver and five passengers. Plus one Indian bus company employee travels all the way from Delhi to Lahore and back.

Throughout the journey the escort vehicles or local police stop all local traffic so that the bus speeds through even normally congested areas. I did feel like I was part of an important cavalcade and as I waved to curious onlookers in the villages we passed through, they enthusiastically waved back.

The bus arrives in Delhi about 12 hours after leaving Lahore. The experience was fantastic and I would recommend it to anyone.

Please PM me if you would like more details.
