Let's just say, there is public transport, but it's not something you want to take. There is no metro. There are buses and commuter trains, but in both cases, they are so crowded and decrepit that anyone who can afford to avoid them does so. You don't have to get a car and driver, but prepare to take a lot of taxis. That is what everyone (including Indians) does.

The bombayites - even the richer ones - swear by their trains, and in fact, for quite a few places, you can either suffer for 15..20 minutes in a train, or sit in a cab (aircon or non aircon, your choice) for over a hour in what's basically an end to end traffic jam.

Which is one reason why I dont visit BOM unless I absolutely have to. Plenty of other cities in India, including where I live, MAA.

Quite true. I have yet to meet a person in my circle of colleagues/friends who ever takes the train, though. Every single one of them drives to work--in most cases sitting in traffic for several hours a day. I personally can't understand it.

Sadly, I do have to, but I have gotten very careful about planning my meetings and hotels so that I am driving back and forth through town as little as possible. I have been known to switch hotels mid-visit--one up by the airport, one around Colaba, with meetings scheduled accordingly!

Try taking the local trains during rush hours and you will understand it *fully*! :D
