1.5 days in Mumbai

I did a quick search and found some interesting things to do in BOM from this thread.

But I figured I'd throw my own thread up on this board. I'll be in Mumbai in mid March with about 1 1/2 days free. I'll be staying at the Oberoi. This is my first time in India / Mumbai, so I'd love to hear suggestions on what not to miss, off the beaten path, favorite experiences, things to bring home, etc.

Thanks in advance.

For starters, if you can, get yourself a Lonely Planet Mumbai.

Few of my suggestions though:

1) A nice boat ride from the Gateway of India. This also goes to the Elephanta caves, but I've heard the caves themselves are a bit of a tourist trap (never been there myself)...

2) Dinner at the Peshawri (Grand Maratha Sheraton by the Intl Airport)

3) Catch a bollywood flick at one of the Art Deco cinemas, even though it won't be subtitled. I think the refurbed Metro should be a good option

4) Wander around the museum area (Kala Ghoda, Asiatic Library, Prince of Wales museum, art galleries, etc)

All the above except 2) are close to where you'll be staying...

Sounds great. Thanks for the advice, esp. the Lonely Planet. A couple of more questions.

- Any specific souvenirs, areas to shop, local handicrafts, advice of that nature
- It looks like I might end up have more time free. What would be next on the agenda.

thanks again!

Sassoon Dock

Get up early and taxi to the Sassoon Dock 30 minutes or more before sunrise. You'll see one of India's most amazing sights--fish boats, women carrying fish baskets on their heads, frantic auctions, fishing crews tossing baskets of fish from the boats up to the dock, mobs of people, a bewildering assortment of types of fish, crabs, shrimp, etc. One of the most memorable experiences of my life.

Be sure to put some Vicks under your nostrils first; the smell will make you gag. :)
