I just did a week trip to Mumbai and had no issues. I hired a car from the hotel I stayed at (Le Royal Meridien) and toured some of the sites (and yes, I took my nice camera...).
Trick is like any other developing country - stay vigilent and don't flash wads of money, jewels, etc.
Also, if you plan to do any shopping put you credit cards and cash in your front pockets. Pick pockets are everywhere...
