Travel Agent Vs. DIY
 

I'm planning my first trip to India and would like to see the golden triangle and Varanasi. Is it relatively easy to arrange everything myself (i.e. transportation and guides...) or am I better off with a travel agent? I am usually a DIY guy, but as this involves quite a bit of intercity transportation, I'm thinking of using a travel agent. If so, any recommendations for travel agents that specialize in Northern India?

DIY was pretty straight forward and very cheap. Didn't even plan it before showing up. Got a sim card and cash when I landed. The golden triangle is well serviced by rail.

I walked up and bought train and attraction tickets. Used Uber and Ola for rides.

You didn't need to buy tickets in advance such as for the Taj Mahal? Do you need to book train tickets in advance?

No to both.

I learned that it's much better to not plan in India. Things don't always run on time. Expect stuff to break down. Or there could be a surprise wedding parade, or cows taking a nap in the middle of an intersection to hold up traffic, and all the cars wait.

You definitely need to book train tickets in advance as there is a good chance they will be sold out if you try to buy them the day of travel.

Travel agents in India are relatively cheap. They can take a lot of the headache out of bookings, especially if you're taking a bus or train or if you're staying at a local hotel. For air travel and international hotels probably not needed. Booking domestic flights within India are cheaper vs booking from abroad. So a travel agent could help with that as well.

You don't need to book Taj tickets ahead of time. You can simply walk up to the ticket counter and purchase it. There are separate prices for foreigners vs Indians/NRIs. But as pointed out, the train to Agra gets filled quickly. You might consider hiring a car/driver to take you around. The downside is the terrible traffic.

Varanasi can be overwhelming, especially to first time travelers. It is a densely populated city with loads of temples along the river banks. Cows are everywhere as it is a sacred city. Be prepared for the smells and sights. Definitely get a guide. The daily aarti on the river bank is not to be missed -- highly suggest going to Dashashwamedh Ghat.
