Goa is roughly divided into two halves. Vasco de Gama airport is right at the border between the two. Panaji is the capital and immediately north of the airport. Fort Aguada is one of the sights to see. Immediately north of that is Candolim and Calangute. Basically a long stretch of road with many hotels, restaurants, wine shops, etc. The beach is about a 5-10 min walk away from the main road in Calangute/Candolim.

South Goa is a lot different - there are a few mega hotels on the beach (Leela Palace, Planet Hollywood, etc). Depends on what you're looking for. If you want to be close to nightlife, restaurants, etc, then go for North Goa (Candolim especially). If you want peace and quiet then South Goa is a good choice.
