Mandatory DCC at Mumbai Duty Free
A warning to anyone who wants to purchase from Mumbai airport Duty Free with a card issued outside India. They are enforcing a mandatory DCC currency conversion with a 10% (yes, TEN percent) convenience charge.
I had a charge of INR 3820 (approx. USD 58.20) that they insisted on trying to charge at USD 63.80. When I asked for the manager he insisted this was a regulation and if I wasn't willing to pay the DCC rate, he would not permit the sale. So I chose not to buy. Just a warning of this little scam. |
wow....a 10% convenience charge sounds ridiculous....
did the manager tell you what type of regulation this was???? |
Indian DF stores are notorious for DCC. DEL is really bad. If I have to buy things there I either use cash or my RuPay debit card...
That said Chase has become really good at DCC refunds for the CSR. They instantly repaid the difference I incurred for DCC at a PVG DF store last year. |

The satellite duty free store near the boarding gate had no such issue and they offered actual DCC at a more realistic rate (INR 66.09 = USD 1), so I bought there at boarding time (without DCC). |
Has something changed recently? I've always paid in USD at Mumbai Duty Free(Arrivals). The prices were always quoted in USD. I've never seen INR prices as technically its illegal to carry INR outside India
