Getting to India Breaking The Trip At SIN or KUL on 2 separate tickets
Posting for a friend.
This person is an Indian citizen+LPR of US, and needs to get to TRZ later this year from NYC or YYZ.
Direct ticketing costs from $1075 and upwards, which usually involves a layover of several hours in CMB.
But a separate ticket to Singapore from US, is about US$666, and a different ticket to their destination from Singapore is about US$222 (checked in Google Flights).
Buying two separate tickets saves them a significant amount of money, and I suppose it might save them a lot of time as well. It also saves the hassle of their family having to drive (10 hours up and down) to MAA to pick them up. This is the main objective. Their father passed away last year, and they don't want to trouble their mother for pickup and drop-off as in the past.
It is almost the same with KUL.
Here are the questions:
1) What are the Singapore/Malaysia visa requirements for an Indian passport holder when they want to buy a separate ticket to Singapore or Malaysia with the intention of getting another flight on another ticket? i.e No requirement for sight-seeing etc.
2) I see TRZ has three daily flights to/from Singapore (1X Air India Express and 2X Tiger Air) whose parent companies are Star Alliance partners. If they book a ticket to Singapore on a Star Alliance ticket, can their luggage be through-checked to TRZ?
3) Is this too much overkill, should they simply book it to MAA instead, book a hotel, stay overnight and get the next flight to TRZ? If the connection is swift at MAA, this wouldn't be much of a concern. But usually it involves a longer wait and of course the additional cost as well.
Thanks for any advice you all can offer.

Thank you for the suggestions Keyser, I will convey this to them. They have 2 kids with US passports, so it may be worth it for them when all 3 of them travel. I will let them decide.
If the same will have to be done by a US citizen (myself), what is the procedure at SIN or KUL for baggage + security when I don't want to get out of the airport?
Also, is the case with Tiger Air same as Air India Express - ie, no through check-in for luggage and no miles credit ?
Between Tiger Air and Air India Express, which is more favored here cost, reliability, service etc?

both tiget air & air india express are low cost carriers....with air india express you won't get miles towards any star alliance carrier except for air india....there is nothing really to pick between the two....i would just go with whichever one is cheaper....

Why on earth do you want to fly to SIN/KUL to get from YYZ/NYC to TRZ?? Just take the direct NYC or YYZ flight to India and then conect via MAA to TRZ. AI will sell you that ticket for 1100$ JFK-(DEL or BOM)-MAA-TRZ with the last leg on a 9W ATR.

oliver2002: Thank you. It is just that MAA is about 4-5 hours by road from the final destination, whereas TRZ is about 2 hours or less. They have relatives in TRZ where they can just drop their luggage and even take a local bus or train to their final destination. This will avoid a 9 hour round trip to MAA for picking them up.
Almost all non-gulf flights arrive in the middle of the night, and the first flight to TRZ is not until 10:00am. There's not enough time for a hotel stay. If they have a direct flight from DEL or BOM to TRZ, it would be ideal. But sadly TRZ has more flights to KUL and SIN than to MAA and no flights to any other destination in India.
Also in consideration is flying out of YVR, where round trip to SIN go for less than $500 at times, and the overall cost is cheaper all the way to TRZ even with a one-way rental car from SEA (where I live) to YVR. There's not much of a time penalty for this either compared to a stop in DEL/BOM/MAA.

So where exactly do they live? NYC or YYC? So to save money they would fly to SEA, drive to YVR, fly to SIN/KUL, change to a LoCo, all to save some 200$/person

oliver2002: They live in ROC.
YVR question is mostly for my trip to India.
But they might visit me sometime in future and I was going to suggest them to combine that trip along with their India trip, if I have a positive experience with YVR-SIN/KUL-TRZ
Nothing is decided yet, as you can tell, we are still evaluating the options.

A plain query sends on SQ you via jfk to SIN, with a two hour connection to TR (Tiger Air) to TRZ. Still think the route via Europe is better, you get to decompress in MAA for 8 hours (maybe an airport hotel) then the ATR flight to TRZ in the morning.

Thank you oliver2002. Your inputs were valuable.
After much discussion, they ended up booking an Jetblue+Emirates to MAA all in one ticket, all the way from ROC.
---
Now, for my case (YVR/SEA to TRZ), what would you advise? ie SIN vs KUL or going to SIN and returning from KUL etc etc.
The cheapest RT fares I found for different routes with 1 stop only are below. I filtered out schedules that are over 27 hours:
United: YVR-SFO-SIN - $464
EVA: SEA-TPE-SIN - $830
EVA: SEA-TPE-KUL - $805
China Eastern: YVR-PVG-KUL - $660
China Airlines: YVR-TPE-KUL - $670
Obviously, I didn't factor the final leg to TRZ and my drive from SEA to YVR in the list above. Also note, I have Priority Pass access, so I don't mind *slightly* longer waits.
Given this, and based on your experience, what would you recommend for this trip to optimize on cost, time and hassle?
Also, I'm curious, how did you generate that table ?

SEA/YVR/YYC-LHR-MAA (British Airways)?
MAA-TRZ - you can get a bus with a flat-bed or bus with regular seats or a train, etc. (or you can fly as well).
I believe Oliver has access to the GDS...which is how he generates those tables.

Thanks ft4lyf.
My destination is TRZ, and I would prefer to avoid MAA as much as possible.
Given that TRZ has 6x daily flights from KUL and 3x daily from SIN and fares to SIN/KUL are very cheap from SEA/YVR, I thought using KUL/SIN as a transit would save time and money.

Sounds like KUL is going to be the winner with so many flights per day.
