Forts in India - how do you rate/rank them ?
 

Hi,
We are spending a week doing the golden triangle - New Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. Every city has its Fort.

Firstly, Fort means Palace - yes ?
Does the allure of the Forts centre around the beauty of the structure or do some also contain heritage (museum like) displays.

Secondly, with the competition to see everything, if you were going to skip some Forts, which would those be ?
Which is the BEST Fort to see, to do properly, and to allocate a substantial part of the day to ?

agra fort, red fort & amber fort would be my 3 picks....

The forts definitely are architectural marvels, but there is a lot of history inside them, which is on display their. I dont remember about Agra Fort, but Red and Amer fort has very good museum. Amer fort is on a hill, so the view is also good. I will suggest go for it.

Make sure to make a day of it and visit Jaigarh Fort right above Amer. I look at it as a 2-for-1 since you can walk from one to the other, and the views from Jaigarh are stunning.

Diu Fort has an unforgettable setting, right overlooking the Gulf of Cambay.

my favorite one is Agra fort, then Jaipur. Delhi fort was a disappointment.

I really really wish the authorities in Agra would look after the cleanliness of the forts a bit better..there is rubbish strewn all over the place at the red fort outside in the drains below which you cannot help but see when you cross the bridge into the fort...

It's the simple things like looking after the cleanliness of the surroundings and toilets that make a difference to tourist visiting...

It's not expensive or hard to do if the people in charge bother...
